I have a Surface Book i7-8650 with 16 GB RAM. 1TB HD. 64 bit operating system 64x Processor. Windows 10 came with the PC when I bought it about 2 years ago.
Running Windows 10 Pro currently at version 1803 and I am just unable to get an update past this version. When I run WU, the software downloads and then starts to install. At 34% installation a WU window appears and then it give me an error message of "You need to restart your PC to finish installing a firmware update. Plug in your PC, make sure the battery is fully charged, restart and then try installing again." I have done this easily 15 times (if not more) and never get past this point.
When I restart the computer (or turn it off completely and then back on) and I run WU again, the exact same screen pops up and I must reset or close WU. Which then of course gets me the same error when I come to reboot. Additionally I have done the following in no particular order.
1. I have run Windows update Trouble Shooter but this has come up with no solutions.
2. I have run a clean reboot via MSconfig and still get the same error.
3. In Regedit I deleted Reboot Key Required.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate\Auto Update\RebootRequired
4. I ran the trouble shooter for Background Intelligent Transfer Service
5. I tried to reset windows update components via this link https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/deployment/update/windows-update-resources but I am not sure if that even worked correctly.
I am stuck and have spent way to much time on this. I am the administrator/owner on this computer. IT/Computing is NOT my profession but I am usually able to figure out my problems on my own or searching the web (that obviously didn't work this time).
Does anyone have any ideas how to fix this or how I can move on???
Thanks
John
