My 5 yr old Dell inspiron computer crashed Monday. My computer version 1909 installed the windows security update KB4549951 April 16. I had problems i thought had resolved (see background info below) All my files are gone and office won't open. The icon is there and I can see it has O bytes of everything. I checked for hidden files but there are none even though the amount of free memory on both is the same as it was before the crash ( see below)

QUESTIONS

Does this mean i don't have a windows suite? I can't open Word, PowerPoint, Excel or one-note.

Is there a way i can recover my office program? It came with the computer so i don't have discs to reload it.

I know the computer is old and i was planning on buying a new one, so i may have to bite the bullet

I'm going to do a chkdisc to see if it has many bad sectors and repair then see if i go back to a point when the files were there and see if i can recover my docs.

I also have recent backups done a couple of days before the crash, but im worried that whatever caused the files to disappear might affect the hard drive if i open it on the computer. Im also wondering if i do have to get a new computer would i be compromising it by opening the hard drives and then using it to transfer files to a new computer.

I'd appreciate your thoughts about whether these are valid concerns in addition to answering my questions about recovering office programs.

Background

My computer windows 10 version 1909 installed the windows security update KB4549951 April 16 and that day my text disappeared in my word documents and in File Explorer. It kept opening and crashing right away or opening and doing weird things so I'd shut it down and I kept rebooting it. I'd get a message in the upper left corner "media failed", then it started to load the sign in screen. .

Finally, it stayed open, the text was back and my computer was its usual finicky self. I thought I was lucky to just have the disappearing text and multiple crashes.

Monday my computer shut down when I left it for a while. When I came back and restarted it I got a message that it hadn't closed properly and did I want to trouble shoot or reboot. I rebooted and everything looked different when it opened

Many of my desktop icons were gone, the background picture was different and the few icons that were there were lined up and orderly.

The taskbar was also pretty empty. My chrome, word, power point, and other customized icons are gone.

I went into file explorer and my frequent folders are all empty, my files are gone; my documents, downloads, pictures, music videos I've done to promote my books, everything

My keyboard had been working off and on so i got a wireless external one, and there were a few other glitches in word like not pasting text id copied but I could workaround. I figured the disappearing text fixed itself and all was well.

I've had a triangular caution sign in the top rt hand corner of Word and PowerPoint on the screen you use to open, save, start a new document since January. When i tried to click it I get a message I have to be signed into my Microsoft account. I am. I couldn't find any help when I checked here and online although other people had the same problems

I do regular virus and malware scans with Macafee and with a fix-it stick. I purchased system mechanic pro in mid march online I did an initial scan but didn't do my april one before the crashed computer.

I also purchased an editing program and installed it at the end of march. I have 1TB of hdd memory and 8 GB of RAM. Im only using 25% of the TB. I still d a few MB of RAM. The computer currently has the same amount of memory as it did before it crashed and everything disappeared.
