*I have a WIN98 , HP Brio , its graphics card has got issues and causing
me grief . My desktop icons are huge and animated , when I try and
change them back and do a reboot as recommended when I get the screen
back it tells me my display adapter is not configured correctly or not
working , which takes me to a page about installing or correcting the
problem by re-installing and rebooting , its a vicious circle of cycles
that do not work . I went to my adapter info and it has an exclamation
mark on the icon . I have a KM 133 from pro savage card , I think its
onboard as well , not sure about that tho , was told by a tech in town
that it was . This all come about when on Sunday coming home from Church
I came to the PC and a black screen , the PC was in safe mode and I
clicked on number 3 flashing and it took me down to whats become a
nightmare . I cannot read my posts on my blogs or those of others , my
cam is nothing but dots of animated colors , I cannot view my pics on my
PC , nor use my media player , I am locked into using 16 colors in the
settings area , whereas I did have 3 settings , 256 colors , 16 bit and
16 colors . The display boxes in chat or webpages are huge . Is there
any hope ? Can this be fixed ? please help !
God Bless ~ Anna ~ *

First, it would be helpful to have the exact model number of you HP so we
can determine the proper driver, and some other potential issues.

Second, when things like this pop-up, generally we attempt to determine
whether you are running any anti-virus and anti-Spyware programs.
And of course whether they are up-to-date, and when the last scan was done.
There are times when some virus, Spyware, or other corrupts the drivers
and/or other files and causes these conditions.

We also generally ask whether you have checked the BIOS to ensure the video
settings are properly set.

So if you can, please provide this entry information so we can review
essential elements per the apparent issue.

You state that you "clicked on number three flashing" which sounds like the Startup
(boot) menu, with number 3 being Safe Mode. You also mentioned the computer being
in Safe Mode elsewhere in that statement. Soooo, it appears that you are in Safe
Mode. That would account for the large icons and inability to change any display
settings.....Safe Mode does not load your specific display driver.

If you are in Safe Mode now, your desktop should have the words "Safe Mode" in all
four corners. Do you see them there? If you are in fact in Safe Mode, what happens
when you click the Start button> Shutdown> Restart? Does it restart back to the
boot menu with Safe Mode as item number 3, or does it start Windows in normal mode?

What are the exact error messages you are getting, if any? Please post them word
for word.

Thank you for answering my post , I truly am appreciative , I will try
and be as helpful as possible about my problem , in answering all and
any questions to the best I can .

Here is what happens : The screen boots into a X pattern , teal and
black , as I have a security screen setup because of multiple users in
my home , I supervise my teens on the pc but they have their own screen
.
Once the password is given ( on both screens ) it goes to a teal green
screen with my icons and they are huge and animated , and a box pops up
saying

Display
Your display adapter is not configured properly . To correct the
problem click OK to start hardware installation wizard .

I click OK

And a new box appears

Add New hardware
This wizard installs the software for a hardware device . Before
continuing close any programs .To begin installation click next

Next

New box
Windows will now search for any new plug and play devices . Your screen
may go blank this is normal . To continue click next .

Next

New Box : Add New Hardware
Is this the device that you want to install listed below ?
o no , the device is not listed
o yes , the device is in the list

select the device that you want to install then click next

( there is a box here to highlight the driver / device and the only
thing here is this with a pc icon with an exclamation mark beside the pc
icon )
S3 Graphics ProSavage

Next

New Box with this in it :
The device is already installed but it has a problem . To view
properties for the device and to see the proposed solution click finish

Okay, sounds like you've potentially negated issues related to virus or
other [at least for now], so what we need is the model number for the HP
which should be shown on the side or back on a sticker, or on the front (?
sorry been awhile since I worked on an older HP).

The reason it can not change the settings or find the driver is a file or
files have apparently been corrupted, which caused the default Windows
480x600 display [real large and ugly low resolution]. That's also why no
setting will change or stick. If you supply the actual HP model number we
can direct you to the download for that particular model...

Thanks Brian, rather distracted at the moment with site related issues,,
mailed and site posted
http://peoplescounsel.orgfree.com/_files/112807_OhioCS/112807_main.htm
..other related aspects are still in process

Again, thanks for covering my neglect to search off HP for a driver ... I
suppose that covered card and on-board chips?.

Did you also note that two registry cleaners had been used EUsing and
ccleaner?

Thank you for the help . I downloaded the drivers you told me to , it
did do some changes and help some , however I now get a display box
stating :
There is a problem with your display settings . The adapter type is
incorrect or the current settings do not work with your hardware .

I now have however 3 color choices , and can change the screen sizes ,
from the huge bulky sizes to back the way they were , and in the
display adapter icons in the systems settings have no more exclamation
mark beside it and the new icon thats generic from the new drivers
doesn't either .

When I reboot after trying to change my settings however , I now go in
smaller circles to get my pc desktop back up after the reboot . now its
just the one box that pops up taking me to the display adapter setting ,
which when changed again , and reboot is done it comes back to the same
box , stating there is a problem with my display settings .

its a case of merry go round on this pc it seems and I am getting
motion sickness about now lol

thank you for all and any help you all may offer .

God Bless ~ Anna ~

How are you identifying that you actually have an S3 ProSavage display adapter?

Download, install, and run EVEREST Free Edition:
http://www.majorgeeks.com/EVEREST_Free_Edition_d4181.html

You can use it to find the true identity of your display adapter.

Run Everest when the installation is complete, expand the Display section in the
left-hand pane of Everest, then select Windows Video and note what is listed there,
and what is listed as the Video Adapter Manufacturer.

Then select PCI / AGP Video and note what is listed for Video Adapter and for 3D
Accelerator.

Next select GPU, and note the video Adapter Name.

Post back with that info.

Thank you for the info at the last link , I did go and download the
tool you requested , I did a report and found this :
PCI / AGP Video
Device Description Device Type
S3 Savage4 Video Adapter
S3 Savage4 3D Accelerator
Video Adapter Properties:
Device Description S3 Graphics ProSavage
Chip Type ProSavage
DAC Type Internal
Installed Drivers s3_8m.drv
Memory Size 8 MB

However when I clicked to the GPU icon , a page to the right expanded
but nothing was there . Just gray .

If you need anything else please let me know , I am enjoying learning
through this process . Thank you so very much . Today I know more than I
ever knew about the pc .
God Bless ~ Anna ~

You probably have integrated video (meaning your display adapter is built into the
motherboard) rather than a separate video card.

Now that you have Everest installed, run it and expand the "Computer" section, then
select Summary.
In the Motherboard field, what does it state is your Motherboard Chipset?
Also, does it state anywhere in the Summary what the model number of HP Brio it is?

Here is HP's drivers page (drivers might be older versions):
http://tinyurl.com/genrv

This appears to be the appropriate graphics driver from VIA's support
site:

Otherwise here is a complete list of Win98SE drivers for VIA's

Some additional things that should also be dealt with/verified:

Make sure your "monitor/display/screen" is shown properly in the settings,
or you will never achieve the desired results.

Of course, you'll need some help lowering that AGP memory issues.

And while in the BIOS, you might want to disable that unique ID [if its the
CPU ID] you no longer need it for HP onsite support and it does provide your
identity ...

AGP Aperture size is a BIOS setting, and your current setting is fine for now. Your
current setting is the BIOS default and most likely what you have been using since
you got the computer. Lowering it will not affect your performance unless you are
playing video-intensive games. With the processor and system memory you have, that
is unlikely.

I suggest concentrating on getting the correct driver installed.....I'll be back
shortly to reply with some info in that regard. I just got home from work.

Welcome home from work . And thank you so much , I appreciate your help
. You're right , I do not play any video games on here , but I do play
Texas Hold-em with fulltilt.com but its not a intensive game of graphics
at all .

I am about to have a emotional moment over this silly thing , ( I am
somewhat of a crybaby lol my tears come easily ) I have read and read on
how to get things back to the right scheme of things and its overloading
my brain , I am truly losing my sense of humor about this whole matter ,
I feel really really stupid and unable to comprehend whats exactly going
on for the most part , but I refuse to give up . I very much appreciate
your help .

Thank you ~ Anna ~

Good! Now we have some more definite information to work with.
The drivers from VIA (www.viaarena.com), which Franc mentioned in his reply, appear
to be the same drivers as Brian had you download and install from the S3 site
earlier. They may very well be the proper driver, but I think there are other
issues interfering.

In your reply to Brian, you mentioned:
"...in the display adapter icons in the systems settings have no more exclamation
mark beside it and the new icon thats generic from the new drivers doesn't either"

This sounds like a description of what you are seeing in Control Panel>
System>Device Manager> Display Adapter ....is that correct? If so, you are
describing two entries for Display Adapter in Device Manager, one for S3 ProSavage,
and another "generic" adapter?

I think this is the procedure you should follow:

Go here:
http://snipurl.com/1uxxp
and download the Chipset driver for the Brio ba410.
Then go here:
http://snipurl.com/1uxxv
and download the AGP Support driver for the brio ba410.
Then go here:
http://snipurl.com/1uxxx
and download the Onboard Video driver for the Brio ba410.

Before installing any of them, however, go to Add/Remove Programs and uninstall any
entry for the S3 driver and any other video driver, then reboot and start in Safe
Mode:
- Restart the computer and hold down the CTRL key till the Windows 98 Startup menu
(boot menu) appears.
OR
- Repeatedly tap the F8 key after the memory count to bring up the boot menu.
- Use the arrow keys to select "Safe Mode" and press Enter.

Open Device Manager in Safe Mode, expand the Display Adapter category, and remove
all entries listed under Display Adapter.

Click OK, then restart back into normal mode.

Now, install the downloaded drivers in the order I had you download them:
- Chipset driver
- AGP Support driver
- Onboard Video driver

Follow the prompts for each installation, and reboot when prompted. You should
reboot after each driver's installation.

See if that fixes it for you.

I have just now responded to your earlier reply, with some instructions for
installing what hopefully will be the right drivers. Please look for my reply.
Read it, print it out if needed, and take your time. Take a break till you are
ready to try it out. It is really simpler than it sounds from reading the reply, so
don't feel intimidated by the instructions. I'll be here. :)

I'll be happy to give as simple an explanation as I can of whatever process you need
help with doing or understanding. If you were in my neighborhood, I'd just drop by
and do the procedure for you.

Chin up! Take a deep breath, or as many as you need.
