New DVD Burner is Listed as a CD ROM in the Device Manager

Hello:

I’m using Windows XP Media edition. I have 2 DVD’s in my system, one of
which is a DVD burner while the second one is a read only DVD combo drive.
Unfortunately, the LG DVD burner would only burn DVDs, it would not burn CDs.
Therefore I purchased a new Sony-NEC DVD burner and installed it Sunday. The
Sony-NEC DVD drive works properly, I can now burn both CDs and DVDs, however,
there appears to be a problem.

In the Device Manager, the new DVD drive is listed as a CD ROM instead of as
a DVD R/W.

In Windows Explorer, it’s listed as a DVD Ram or Rom drive, I can’t remember
which one.

With the original LG DVD burner, it was correctly listed in both the Device
Manager and in Windows Explorer as a DVD R/W with the correct model name.

Thanks,
Robert

An explanation for your situation is that when Windows asked the controller
what kind of device is connected to it, the Sony replied CD ROM. However,
the LG replied DVD/RW.
However, as long as you can burn and read DVD disks in the Sony, there
really isn't anything to worry about. It is just a label.

Hello Jim:

Thanks for the reply. Even though everything's working properly, I was
concerned that it might be a driver or firm update issue causing the Device
Manager to read the wrong information. But as you said, everything's working
well so far [at least it has for the past 2 days].

It is more likely a firmware problem. For some reason, the drive is
misreporting its identity.
