Since May 12 my own workstation running Win 7 Pro 64bit for it first time!
After sorting out device drivers, automatic software activation, and moving my files from the older XP Pro installation to the new, I did test the operation of Windows defender and while it does work I got error code 0x80070643 from the updater.
The updater it did contact Microsoft server but this is was unable to load the updates.
I did Win7 installation with my retail DVD media SP1 included.
Second step was to load Convenience rollup update Win 7 SP2 3125574 (2016).
( I could not install my video card driver with out it )
Even so Windows Defender spyware Definitions they were old and dated at 2010.
The solution which I found this is manual installation of latest Definitions
After installation of latest Definitions then Windows Defender and it own updater now works properly.
If you are unable to find Windows Defender shortcut then search for MSASCui . executable in you system.
