It's possible the cmos battery died and the settings were lost for your
harddrive ...

enter the bios and see if you can re-detect the drive...

If you can but the settings get lost again...you'll need to replace your
cmos battery
(no big deal)

The battery is good. I think the kids did something to the computer. Thanks.

Does it seem that the hard drive is recognized by BIOS during post?

(A) Eject any floppy or CD left in a drive.
Does it still happen? Then...

(B) By the word of Starman, these are the error messages of the MBR
(Master Boot Record) code...
http://thestarman.pcministry.com/asm/mbr/STDMBR.htm

Invalid partition table.
Error loading operating system.
Missing operating system.

And these are of PBR (Partition Boot Record) code...
http://thestarman.pcministry.com/asm/mbr/MSWIN41.htm

Invalid system disk.
Disk I/O error.
Replace the disk, and then press any key.

(C) Get a Startup Diskette from
http://www.bootdisk.com/ , if you don't already have one from "Control
Panel, Add/Remove Programs, Startup Disk tab". Put the diskette in &
turn on the computer. (It may be necessary to enter BIOS Setup & set the
floppy to boot above the hard drive.)

Enter "DIR C:" at the A:\ Prompt.
Did you get a listing or an error message?

Enter "FDISK /Status"
What shows up?

Thanks or Good Luck,
There may be humor in this post, and,
Naturally, you will not sue,
Should things get worse after this,

Go to http://www.bootdisk.com/bootdisk.htm and create a Windows 98
boot floppy. Use it to start the computer in question, select "Start computer
without CD-ROM support", type "sys c:" at the "A:\" prompt and press "Enter".
Then remove the floppy and restart.

I have a Compaq Presario that has Windows 98 SE on it
I keep getting the same error message that the operating system can not
be found. When I try to upgrade to a newer version of windows and I keep
getting the error messages that my hard drive can not be detected.
Please help me. I have tried everything and don't know what I can do to
fix it. It seems that my hard drive is not being detected.

Start the computer and watch the screen closely for something like
"Press delete for setup". Press the appropriate key, find "Autodetect
Hard Drives" and perform the detection. Be sure to save the changes
when exiting. Please note that the setup screens typically have instructions
at the bottom or side of the screen and often there is no mouse support.
