Windows won’t detect cd

Im trying to burn some files to a disk on my HP Pavillion entertainment laptop, which is running on vista. Its got roxio creator basic v9 on it and when i put the dvd+r disk in the tray, it doesnt detect it anf asks me to put a disk in. The computer itself wont detect it either. What should i do?
