Windows XP Pro Product Key Issue

I have an old laptop that I purchased a new hard drive for, and am attempting to reload XP Professional on it. Unfortunately, the product key stamped on the bottom of the laptop is somehow invalid. I am stuck on the Product Key page, and have called Microsoft Tech Support, to no avail (too antiquated of an OS).
