I use Windows XP. I keep my PC on all the time. This morning I was awoken by my computer's showing a popup ballon in the notifcation area, but I was not fast enough to get up and see it.
I checked the Event Log Viewer, but there is nothing entered at the time I saw it. The most recent entry in ELV was from around noon, but this notification happened at around 6 pm.
I checked everything I thought it might be - dropped external drives (and/or other PnP devices), Delayed Write Failure warnings (as I said, the Event Log showed nothing to such effect, and usually when DWFs happen there's hundreds of entries flooding the log), hardware detections (there were no alert icons in Device Manager suggesting drivers were needed or something), etc - but nothing indicated any kind of problem or alert.
I ran 3-phase check disks on all volumes to check for connectivity and stability - everything was good there.
I thought it might have just been the Desktop Icon Cleanup Wiard, but I thought the little "Info" icon stays in the tray until dismissed, but it was not there.
I am really concerned what it was, in case it was serious.
I have NEVER had a notification happen without something to prompt it, and the PC was sitting idle for at least 6 hrs.
The only automatic notifications I ever get are the Dekstop Cleanup Wizard prompts at system startup every few weeks, but again, there was no trace of that to suggest it was the CU Wizard.
The ONLY issue I recently had was some issues with an installed game program (Steam) that suddenly decided it woul;d refuse to launch a particular game (within its "library), for no apparent or logical reason (generating its own internal error about "busy servers, which makes no sense cos I run it in offline mode), but it's not likely to have prompted a Windows notifcation alert, especially when it was not even running.
I only mention it cos it is the ONLY thing that I've had any kind of issue with recently. Everythign else has been fine, save for system sluggishness, which I attrirbute to the drive getting full.
So...
How do I find a log or record of ALL notifications that popup like that, which may not warrant being logged in the Event Log Viewer, so I can see what the hell it was and put my mind at ease? Surely there must be another log or list stored somewhere?
I do not want to just assume that it was "nothing important", just because there's no obvious record of it logged in the most obvious spots (like ELV), and wasn't anything important.
Thanks.

PS - I wasn't sure how to cetegorize this issue, so I selected "Desktop & Startup" cos "Desktop" seemed like the closest match.
