Windows 2003 SP2 R2 and slow behavior of EXPLORER.EXE

D

Denis Lamothe

I am currently in the process of debugging 3 servers on one domain (2 DC and
a simple member server) all running on Windows 2003 SP2 R2.

I will explain the problem more in details... it all started when i
installed SP2 on the member server. Everything was working fine on all 3
servers before SP2. However, when i install SP2 on one of the servers, i am
getting slow behavior of EXPLORER.EXE getting so slow, that a window opened
becomes NOT RESPONDING... but, if i let it go for a couple of minutes, it
will eventually become active again. I also notice that hitting Start and
Program, the browsing of menu is slow... it's also slow when i Start, Run
and type in something.

All those servers are running mostly the same hardware, with 1 gig of
memory. If i uninstall SP2, it's all working very well again. When the
problem is present, i checked disk activity, cpu activity, memory activity
and everything is idle... memory usage is around 350-400mb so over 600mb is
still free. Server is not swapping. If i close EXPLORER.EXE the desktop
dissapear and when it comes back, it's fast again for a while, then it
starts again until it hangs again...

I destroyed my domain, and built it from scratch with 2003 R2 SP2 CD and
promoted my 2 DC's again and it's all up and running but still get the same
problem. It's virus free (got Symantec Enterprise v10 Server-Client
installed) and spyware free (no server has access to internet directly
anyway). All fix-packs and updates are installed and working. I have checked
the eventlog several times on all 3 servers, and nothing, there are no
errors and/or warnings about anything on them. Can anyone help me, i am
starting to regret to deploy SP2 on this domain cause it was all going
perfectly before this... now i am stuck with a slow EXPLORER.EXE on all 3
servers... which impacts any work done on those servers, either with
Terminal Server or on the console directly...

Anyone can help out?

Perhaps just leave off SP2 for the time being, a lot of people are
having trouble with it.
