Norton Anti virus update

Norton prompted me to update the anti virus system. When I did that and tried
to restart the computer, it freezes and won't let me start in anything other
than "safe mode". Norton uninstalled the software & it is still happening.
Any ideas?

Please explain the above. How did Norton do that ?
And, since it was Symantec's 'software' that caused this issue, you
should ask them for help resolving it.

I called Symantec for help. They walked me throught the uninstall and since
the problem was still occuring they said I needed to call the computer mfr.
They said it was not their problem since it still was happening after their
software was uninstalled.

You may need to do a Repair Install. It is difficult to say what
happened because we don't have an accurate picture of the true state of
your computer. At this point, you should consider your level of computer
skills dispassionately and decide whether the best solution is to take
the machine to a qualified computer professional. This will not be a
BigComputerStore/GeekSquad type of place. I don't say this to hurt your
feelings or disparage your mad skilz in any way I'm just being practical.

If you feel you want to try and fix things yourself, back up your data
first. Then make sure the computer is really virus/malware-free and has
no other errors. Check Event Viewer to see what may be happening. Do
maintenance and then try a Repair Install. All of these steps can be
done in Safe Mode.

How-To

If the Repair Install doesn't work, test the hardware briefly to make
sure it is sound and then do a Clean Install of Windows.

What you will need on-hand

Afterwards, do not install garbage programs made by Norton or McAfee.
Recommended antivirus programs are NOD32, Kaspersky, and Avast (free).
The Windows Firewall is adequate for most people.

thanks for the info-you can't hurt my feelings. I paid HP $50 last night to
'fix' my system and they said I need to go get a new hard drive. That was
after running recovery. They said it was a coincidence that things started
malfunctioning right after I downloaded the Norton updates. I will get the
back up done today and then maybe call someone to come look at this.

Thanks again.

Here is something to read about Symantec and maybe the two are related:
