Emails I am writing and sending are no longer appearing in my sent items box

I have been successfully sending and receiving gmail on the windows mail app for several years on my laptop. However, just recently I have noticed that emails I am writing and sending are no longer appearing in my sent items box. After some searching I found them in the junk box. What is going on and how do I fix it? thank you. for further info I can confirm that recipients are receiving my emails and emails I send are being correctly posted as sent items on my other (ios) devices. This makes me think the problem is with my windows 10 device and or windows mail. app
