Windows Server 2016 Essentials and Standard Servers as Domain Controllers

Is it possible at all to have a Windows Server 2016 Essentials server as a primary domain controller, and another on the same domain running Windows Server 2016 Standard as a secondary domain controller, more as a backup in case the primary controller goes down for a short period of time? I know it's not possible to have two Essentials servers on the same domain as domain controllers, but I do not know if this would be possible without needing CAL licenses for each device.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
