Cannot reassign VM if AD user is deleted first

After a user has been deleted in Active Directory Users and Computers, the virtual machine that was assigned to them in the Server Manager on the broker cannot be assigned to a new user. The user name changes to a string of numbers, i.e. S-1-5-21-773......... When trying to assign a new user to that VM a basic error occurs of "Could not assign the virtual desktop "vmsname" to the user account "usersaccount" Exception <and repeats message once>"



How can I have these released to reassign without deleting and creating a new VM?
