A problem using Bing

M

ms

My intent is to format a P166 for use as a DOS computer.
It had W95, a prior uninstall of Norton AV caused error screens so I had to
format.

When I tried a W95 boot disk, format, got error: insufficient memory to
load system files.

I then ran Bing, it did format, I rebooted with the W95 boot disk, at A:,
entered C:, no C:.

Ran Bing again, named the drive C, but see legend that the drive is not
available to anything as it has Bing installed on it.

Then rebooted with W95 boot disk, message: can't find Bing, assume it wants
the Bing boot disk.

I need to wind up with a C drive for DOS, and have created something else.

Advice?

Uninstall BING, per the detailed instructions here:
http://www.terabyteunlimited.com/kb...ation/article/How-to-Uninstall-BootIt-NG.html

In the future, if you just need to use BING for partition work you do not need to
install it on the hard drive, which is apparently what you did.

Simply boot with the BING floppy, when prompted to Install, click Cancel, and enter
Maintenance Mode.

Well, here's an article that mentions that...
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/177864
Insufficient Memory to Load System Files

.......Quote the article..............
SYMPTOMS
When you try to format your hard disk, you may receive the following
error message:
Insufficient memory to load system files.
Format terminated.

CAUSE
This problem can occur if either of the following conditions exists:
• You attempt to format your hard disk using the "format c: /q/u/s/v"
command at a command prompt, and there is not enough free conventional
memory to use the /s parameter (switch).
• You start your computer using the Windows Startup disk and then
attempt to format your hard disk.

RESOLUTION
To work around this problem, use the appropriate method below:
• Do not use the /s parameter (switch) with the Format command. After
the format process is finished, transfer the system files to the hard
disk using the SYS C: command.
• If you are using Windows 98, restart your computer using the Windows
98 Startup disk, choose Start Computer With CD-ROM Support on the
Microsoft Windows 98 Startup menu, and then use the FORMAT command to
format your hard disk.

STATUS
Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products
that are listed at the beginning of this article.
.......EOQ................................

| I then ran Bing, it did format, I rebooted with the W95 boot disk, at
| A:, entered C:, no C:.

BING, if I recall correctly, doesn't have a separate FORMAT command. The
format is done automatically after a partition is created, if it is a
FAT partition.

| Ran Bing again, named the drive C, but see legend that the drive is
| not available to anything as it has Bing installed on it.

It isn't the name of the partition that matters. It's the letter. You
can't assign the letter, that's automatic by these rules...
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=51978
Order in Which MS-DOS and Windows Assign Drive Letters

| Then rebooted with W95 boot disk, message: can't find Bing, assume it
| wants the Bing boot disk.

I'm not sure exactly what you did with BING. Could it be you created
something that was not a FAT partition?

| I need to wind up with a C drive for DOS, and have created something
| else.
|
| Advice?

Maybe...

(1) Boot the BING floppy, & get into the Work with Partitions Screen.
Do that by clicking CANCEL at the Install Requestor.
(2) Uninstall BING from the hard drive, if you've installed it.
(If you can, do this before step one.)
(3) Delete the partition you created earlier, if still there.

Now, create your partition. Make sure it is a FAT partition. Make sure
it is a Primary partition. If you use BING to do it, you won't have to
FORMAT it. If you use the Windows Startup Diskette to create the
partition with FDISK, then you must reboot & format it. If there is only
one partition, it will be C: after that reboot.

Thanks, Glen

Initially, Bing wanted to install to the hard drive, should have not done
that. The link you gave me was good, lots of Bing data.

It states that Uninstall is only available if Bing is installed on the
hard drive, which it had done. But Utilities/Uninstall is greyed out. I
dunno. I looked through the data, don't find that combination.

If I remove the Bing floppy, reboot, the screen asks for it, even though
it installed to the hard drive. I can't bootup w/o the Bing floppy.

Please refer to my reply to PCR for the DOS part.

Thanks, PCR

That explains the error screen, if I can get back there, I'll try that.

Format is a Bing command in Maintenance Mode.

When I got the (turns out) standard error screen above, then I tried Bing
to work with the hard disk.
Bing formatted as a FAT 32 partition.

As I replied to Glen, there is where I'm stopped. At this point, can't
uninstall Bing.

I would do that if I could.

I tried the W95 startup disk again, can use a W98 disk but believe the
results would be the same. I wind up at A prompt, but it does not
recognize C until I can get rid of Bing.

Read replies to date. My memory is hazy, but here goes. Believe win95 and
version A don't understand FAT32. Version B and C do. (If I remember
correctly).

A "dos computer" could mean any version of msdos. That, in itself, may be
problem concerning a FAT32 partition. Depending of course of the version of
msdos you're talking about. (You left that out, hmmmm). Guess its the same
old story/different day, eh?

Bing formatted, so W95 is gone.
Your comment explains why in Bing it reported one partition as FAT-16.
But I hope to start over, Fdisk, format

That's later, after the above, it will be DOS 6.22 for old DOS games.

That is what I did first, where Uninstall is greyed out.

I see that menu, but all is greyed out except Upgrade BootIt.

From what it shows, getting the above menu suggests installed from a
floppy. But the hard drive inaccessible now is due to Bing being
installed on the hard drive. ??.

I found on those links an inactive support forum, public.apps.bootitng,
last posts in July 2005, but my newsgroup server shows no public*
newsgroups.

In Uninstall in the manual, I found this:
---------
If your system boots the incorrect partition or won’t boot at all, then
you can use FDISK to set the correct partition active or you can use the
BootIt NG floppy disk to set the correct partition active ....snip
------------

The C partition is presently set Active.

Fdisk does not now see C. Having looked at either hard drive install or
floppy install, each Uninstall option seems to lead to a dead end, with
greyed out options.

Is there some way in DOS, starting with a boot floppy, to remove Bing and
recover the C drive?

Thanks

If you click on the third link I gave you:
http://www.terabyteunlimited.com/webnews.html
then click on the link named "BootIt Next Generation" in the box with the heading
"Select Newsgroup", you will be in the BING web forum, where you can ask your
questions. The posts there are current, the latest is from today.

With the news server supplied by my Roadrunner cable connection, I can go to
news://news.terabyteunlimited.com/public.apps.bootitng
using port 1198 and find posts from today.

Thanks, Glen, I see it there as a web forum. Will post there.

From your response, I guess there is no DOS way to remove the Bing effect

From my post you should infer that I only know of the ways BootIt recommends and
have not tried any other ways, so I cannot recommend any other method from personal
experience.

You are welcome.

| That explains the error screen, if I can get back there, I'll try

|
| Format is a Bing command in Maintenance Mode.

Yes, I see, reviewing the BootItNG.pdf, that's right-- it does seem
there is an option whether to format certain partition types (FAT types
for sure) during the process of creating them. After that, there will be
a format command offered in Maintenance Mode, right, I guess to
re-format it when desirable, which must wipe it. OK, then.

But I don't recall having to separately format mine-- I guess the option
to do it was selected by default during the create. Or, I have forgotten
that I did select it.

| Bing formatted as a FAT 32 partition.

Normally (as I recall it), BING creates & installs itself into a special
partition type called EMBRM (I believe)-- not a FAT32 partition. To get
it into a FAT32 partition, I believe you would separately have to create
the partition, & then choose to have BING install into it. Is that what
you did?

Can it be the FDISK on a Win95 Startup Diskette will not recognize a
FAT32 partition, as Lil' Dave suspects? And I'm fairly sure no FDISK
will recognize an EMBRM. Therefore, continue at Terabyte support. I know
you are not seeing an uninstall option after you boot the BING
partition. What about doing it manually, as Terabyte suggested? Boot the
BING partition, &...

......Quote Terabyte's answer to you......
to manually uninstall, click undo embr, click view mbr, ensure the
correct
partition is active, click std mbr, apply.

If that works, then delete whatever partitions remain using BING. You
may need to reboot to Maintenance Mode first off the BING floppy. Then,
create one that is a FAT16, (unless you discover that FAT32 ultimately
really will be OK for DOS 6.22. Then, make it another FAT32, but get a
better FDISK...

| As I replied to Glen, there is where I'm stopped. At this point, can't
| uninstall Bing.

Boot the BING partition, & see whether you can do the manual uninstall
Terabyte said. If that fails, see whether BING will delete the
partitions, especially the EMBRM if still there, after booting the BING
Maintenance Diskette. Also, see whether it will replace BING's MBR with
a standard MBR.

It could be as Lil' Dave said-- a Win95A FDISK is inadequate to the
task. But I somehow doubt even an updated FDISK would see an EMBRM (If
you've got one). It certainly, you know, would see a FAT32, though.

Thanks to your advice and Glen and Lil' Dave, I just finished formatting C,
finally! I was finally able to switch Fat 32 to Fat 16, no real impact as
it will be DOS anyway, IIRC. Then, I was able after removing EMBR as I had
done previously, applied STD MBR, and finally had a usable C drive. It will
be a long time before I ever use BING again, it needs considerable research
first.

And thanks for the link to the later fdisk, will be useful later.

Now an easier question, I think. This P166 will only be used for DOS
operations, mainly old DOS games. It's an oddball, a Compac Presario with a
row of buttons across the top, what looks like a power button does not work
I use the switch at the back in the power supply.

Advice from before was it was not necessary to install DOS 6.22 for this,
just sys.com, a few DOS files, (?), I have to look that up in my records.

Comment?

So! That was it, then! I see they also are saying as much at the
Terabyte site-- that Win95 predates FAT32 & would need an update to see
it. Now, I think it has been mentioned here in this NG before. That's
one fine memory Lil' Dave has!

It likely will be worth the research. I've never installed it (I still
might someday), but I have created & shrunk partitions in Maintenance
Mode off the floppy. It could be made more clear as to what type of
partition is being created when creating a new one. Also, I use it to
create my full system backup, which is a perfect copy of a bootable
C:partition. I do think there should be a message on its install screen
to say-- click CANCEL to enter Maintenance Mode.

| And thanks for the link to the later fdisk, will be useful later.

You are welcome. It too will create a FAT16. Just answer no to the
question... Do you wish to enable large disk support (Y/N)...........?

Mine is a Compaq Presario 7470. Does that button have a crescent moon
with a light on it? Then, possibly it is a sleep button.

Yea, look it up. Probably, you do not need all of DOS just to run games,
but it may vary depending on the game.

No wonder it did nothing I could see.

There is no other obvious other large button for a power button, the
other small buttons across the top do not effect power. Strange.

I am having to dig into upper memory, etc. for those old games, used to
know that but bad sleep gives me a fresh start, as they say. IIRC, I have
to install DOS to get the ability easily to modify memory.

Thanks again for all the help. I have to dig into that Dell with the
video problem.

Well, my Compaq keyboard never came with a power button, either. It is
on the front of computer box. However, this computer will shut itself
off from the Windows shutdown menu. I guess that is ACPI.

Maybe start a new thread on DOS games. I'm not a user of them. I would
expect they set up their own DOS environment. However, it could be some
will need normal DOS commands, etc., to already exist on the machine.

Mine is a Compaq Presario 8702, a strange one as there is no power button
on the front, a small top button labeled Q does nothing, 4 other small
ones do nothing. I have to use the back switch on the power supply.

Wierd.
