no sound output

dictionary2006

I have a new laptop (72 hours)- my first computer ever. although i've had
decent experience on many others, i can't seem to get any sound output. i got
on the phone with compaq/hp tech support: they had me reinstall everything
(Wind.Med.Plyr and OS) but to no avail. in the media player, the status bar
of the sound rises and fall like it's working- but it's not. Any clues,
information or help will be supremely appreciated. Thank you.

-- Hi dictionary2006 - Not knowing if you mean speaker output or computer
sounds, both are found in Control Panel>Sound. In "Playback" make sure
speakers are "Working".
"Sounds" has your computer sounds settings.
"Personalization" also has related settings. Good luck

Something I found in earlier versions of Windows, but this version did not
do to me, was that my sound 'card' was listed in the Device Manager as
'Unknown', with a question mark, and so - no sound. Deleting the entry and
reinstalling the drivers invariably fixed it (aside: was pleasantly
surprised when did not need to do this for Vista)

Random thought, perhaps, maybe...
