Importing Photos from iPhone 7plus to Windows 10 PC stops after a few photos

  • in the W10 Photo app, all the pictures are found, but after importing a few images it says "something went wrong" (no further info is given, link provided goes to generic site about importing photos, not about errors)
  • through Windows Explorer import, it similarly stops importing with a "device unreachable error" after a few images
  • when I use the copy/paste solution I also get "device unreachable" after a few images

Solutions I found online and tried

  • reinstalling iTunes app through Windows store
  • setting iPhone Photo app to "Keep originals" (see here)
  • tried 2nd USB cable (both are original)
  • tried on a friend's laptop and on my work laptop (work laptop does not have iTunes, not sure about friend's laptop but I think it has)
  • installed iCloud fotostream on my PC (photos won't download, according to Apple's instructions I should see a Download button somewhere but did not find it)
  • download via iCloud website (it gets a large portion of the images but not all)

Setup
  • iPhone 7plus 32 GB, model nr MNQM2GH/A
  • bought in feb 2020, guarantee until 4-2-2021
  • 30,3 GB in use
  • iTunes version 12.8.10
  • iOS 13.6.1 (updated on 19 aug 2020 but has not made a difference)
  • Microsoft Surface Pro 4 tablet PC with 1 USB poort (USB 3.0)

Other things
  • I don't get the "trust this PC" prompt on the iPhone each time I connect, only sometimes
  • the iPhone is displayed in Windows Explorer as a generic drive (called Apple iPhone), you don't see an icon that looks like a phone (like I think was present for my previous iPhone)

Tests
  • making a backup copy of the iPhone through iTunes works (so connection appears to work fine and stable for much longer than the image import process, that quits much quicker
  • importing was not a problem with my previous iPhone (6S)
  • iTunes diagnostic tests:
    • network connections: all tests succeed
    • connected devices: all tests succeed, iphone found, but oddly enough it says it did not find a USB port. All support services (ipod, mobile device, itunes helper) active
    • Synchronisation: all tests succeed
