70 GB of Files I can't Find

Hi all,

When I check the individual folder properties on the main hard disk on my
system, I can find 30 GB of data on a fairly new installation of Windows
Vista Ultimate. However, when I check the properties for the disk itself
(with the pie chart), I see 100 GB of data taking up space on a 500 GB hard
disk. I run scans regularly, the antivirus and antimalware software is
updated daily, and I don't go to any internet sites that are considered
hazardous. Does anyone know what might cause the disparity of 70 GB?

Run disk cleanup tool (cleanmgr.exe) and remove old restore points.
Some free space may be reserved for recycle bin too.

Hi Arkadiusz,

Thanks for the reply. Interestingly, I ran the beta for Vista SP1, and it
cleared out all of the extra files. That indicates you are correct.
Somewhere, those files were hiding. Maybe in old restore points.

Added Note: It was the system restore and shadow copies. This was in the
Disk Cleanup applet under Other Options. Once I selected to go to the most
recent restore point, a massive amount of disk space opened up.
