remote desktop from Mac to Windows XP

I downloaded remote desktop. I can see the pc but it won't accept a user name and password. I assume it's asking for my Mac's sign in user name and password. The windows machine has no password. Never did. I just get a "system cannot log you on" error. My MacOs is High Sierra if that makes a diff.
