File sharing between Windows 10 pro and Windows XP professional not working on network

I am struggling when trying to access my OLD Windows XP Professional file system from my NEW Windows 10 Pro system and I've tried a bunch of things. First, exact configurations:

OLD: Windows XP Professional Version 2002, Service Pack 2. Computer name: GATEWAY Workgroup: WORKGROUP

NEW: Windows 10 Pro version 1903 OS Build 18362.1016. 64-bit. Device Name: Leon-2ndT570 Workgroup: WORKGROUP

I see the systems in the network.

On the OLD system I see Leon-2ndT570 under My Computer/My Network Places/Entire Network/Microsoft Windows Network. When I click on it the following error is displayed: \\Leon-2ndT570 is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions. The network path was not found.

On the NEW system I see GATEWAY under Network in File Explorer. When I click on it, I get a Windows Security dialog to Enter network credentials. Enter your credential to connect to GATEWAY. I enter the username and passwords both just with the user name and the \\Leon-2ndT570\username and \\GATEWAY\username formats. I always get "The username or password is incorrect" errors.

Some things I've done:

  • created matching accounts, with identical usernames and passwords on both systems.
  • enabled SMB 1.0/CIFS File Sharing Support on the new system (SMB 1.0/CIFS Client)
  • enabled remote desktop on both my OLD and NEW systems and have connected that way.
  • tried accessing my NEW system files through explorer... \\Leon-2ndT570 in address. I get the following: Windows cannot find \\Leon-2ndT570 Check the spelling and try again, or try searching for the item by clicking on the Start button and then clicking Search
