If you would post what *file* or application you installed this might help.

The error could be caused by a number of things, including installing
something incompatible or not well written, improper or failed registry
setting effected by the installation, to failed installation, incompatible
versions of various files causing the eventual error, to ...

It would also be helpful to know the update statis of the affected
computer, and whether it is a standard install or which has had any
un-official tweaks or files used.

Not sure how the installation of a generic USB driver a year ago is relevant to the
discussion.

If you error began right after installing the Windows 98 SE Shutdown Supplement
(4756us8.exe), uninstall the update, reboot, and see if the error still occurs.

If there is no entry in Add/Remove Programs for uninstalling the Supplement, click
Start> Settings> Folder Options> View tab, and click to enable "Show All Files" and
click OK.

Then find the file named 239887UN.INF, right click it and click 'Install' on the
menu that appears.

The 239887UN.INF file is probably in the C:\Windows\Inf\QFE\Q239887 folder.

If the error still occurs, I would guess that the person who installed it just to
see what it would do, probably did some other things too.

The file 4756us8.exe was installed when someone clicked on it just to see
what would happen, (windows 98se Q239887). This was a standard install but
a generic usb driver file was installed last year with no issues. The usb
drive works fine, haven't seen any other problems...
