Ripping Audio CD Problems

I've been trying to find a way/software to rip some CDs.
The only thing I've accomplished so far is to get myself
wrapped around the axle so tightly that a rabid feeling
started coming over me. So.....I unclenched my teeth, wiped
the foam from my mouth and decided to come dip into this
fountain of knowledge. And yes, I'm probably one of the
last five people in the universe that is still using Windows
ME (and proud of it podner). Enough frivolity, on to the
serious stuff.

I have downloaded various programs that advertise they will
rip CDs and will work with Windows ME. The programs are:
CDex
Express Rip
WinAmp
dBpoweramp Music Converter
Exact Audio Copy

All of them except Exact Audio Copy did not show/list my
CD-RW drive nor
my CD-R drive.

Exact Audio Copy although installed would not even open. It
just gave error message
"The ASPI interface could not be initialized correctly!
(Error E8h) (No host adapters found)"

I started Googling and did not find anything specifically
talking about ME yet there are quite a number of problems
with "Rippers" failing to detect drives. A lot of proposed
fixes talked about ASPI layers (yeah, like I understood that
<bg>) and that WNASPI32.DLL needed to be installed or
updated. Most of the problems being reported were by folks
running XP (not unexpected as most of the world is on XP).

My WNASPI32.DLL in Windows\System folder was Version 4.71.1
so I downloaded and installed Version 4.71.2 but that didn't
help.

Now I'm done with my whimpering. Are any of you who use ME
doing any "ripping"?
What 'Ripper" do you use? After reading my incoherent
whining, any scientific guesses as to how my problems can be
corrected so I can become a rip-roarin' buckaroo?

Lack of the ASPI layer can cause problems when accessing optical media.
This is an interface designed by Adaptec and now rather dated and no
longer really supported. Win Me contains a rudimentary aspi layer (the
two files apix.vxd and wnaspi32.dll) and it is, I think, missing from XP.
In the past the full/proper ASPI layer could only be installed (free) if
you had an item of Adaptec hardware on the system but I think this is no
longer the case - it can be downloaded from
http://www.adaptec.com/en-US/speed/software_pc/aspi/aspi_v470_exe.htm.
The more usual method today of creating an aspi layer is for those running
Nero to use Nero's ASPI layer (WNASPI32.DLL) and to copy this file to the
folder containing the program that requires the layer such as Exact Audio
Copy. That is what I have done here to get EAC working correctly.

Ah! I see that the Adaptec site includes the following note:
Notes: At this time Adaptec is allowing the download of this file
without regard to ownership of retail Adaptec Products.

Hi Mike.

Been a long while since our last exchange of posts so thanks
for the quick reply.

Earlier today I had downloaded aspi_471a2.exe from
snapfiles.com and then ran "install.bat x86" after which
AspiChk showed my APIX.VXD and WNASPI32.DLL were both
showing that Version 4.71.1 had been replaced with Version
4.71.2..

If you had success with EAC on an ME machine then I will
have to try the
snip>Nero's ASPI layer (WNASPI32.DLL) and to copy this file
to the
folder containing the program that requires the layer such
as Exact Audio
Copy<snip

Since I don't use Nero I'll probably download a Trial and
"borrow" the DLL to stick in EAC.

I lurk around the group often to keep abreast of what's
happening. I enjoy that the old regulars still use this as
a meeting place. This is a good time to wish you and yours

http://aspi.radified.com/aspi_layer.htm , there was a recommendation:

"If you still have problems ripping or burning after installing the latest
Adaptec ASPI layer drivers, it's usually due to a problem with your burner
or CD-ROM drive. It might be a good idea to try ripping with a program such
as AudioCrusher, which doesn't require/use an ASPI layer."

However, the download link for the Nero WNASPI32.dll no longer works, and
just takes you to Nero's home page. It seems you'll have to download the
entire Nero 7 for Win 98/ME at:
http://www.nero.com/eng/downloads-nero7-98me.php . Then you'll be able to
copy the WNASPI32.dll as you had planned.

Well O.J. things are never easy. Looks like AudioCrusher
might be a small, simple program..........however..........I
downloaded and when it opened got error msg.
"No supported CD drives were found in your PC. Either they
are not properly set up or they are not yet supported by
AudioCrusher." I sent a bug report giving them the error
and the type of drives that I have.

Job says, "Some things ventured are a waste of tim.....no
that's doesn't sound right. What is that saying? ? ? ?
Oh yeah! Nothing ventured nothing gained."

I downloaded Nero Ver. 6 Package 1 from
http://www.nero.com/eng/downloads-nero6-update.php and
copied its WNASPI32.DLL into the EAC folder. Still when I
attempt to open EAC I get the error message "The ASPI
interface could not be initialized correctly! (Error E8h)
(No host adapters found)

Looks like Windows ME and "Ripping" programs are just not
compatible, at least on my system.

When you said that was what you did to get EAC to work
correctly was that on your ME machine or your XP machine?

P.S. I downloaded Nero Ver 6 (34 M) instead of Ver 7 (237
M)

On _your_ system maybe but the problem isn't intrinsic to Win Me. In fact
you are probably one of few having such problems in the seven plus years
since Win Me was released. There are lots of availalble applications
including even Windows own Windows Media Player - not that I would
recommend using WMP. Your problem would appear to be communicating with
your optical drive, details of which such as make and model I don't think
you have mentioned.

I've used EAC without problem on PCs running Win 98SE, Win Me and XP.

I have never needed to use an additional ASPI layer my Win Me PC - I
simply mentioned this as a possible fix for when EAC cannot see the
optical drives. It was on a PC running XP where EAC having worked without
problem for a number of years that suddenly couldn't see the drives where
I solved the problem by placing a copy of WNASPI32.DLL from Nero in the
EAC program folder. Ahead/Nero's file WNASPI32.DLL isn't tied to a
specific version of Nero. The version I am using is 2.0.1.74 dated
October 2004. EAC on other machines running XP has never needed the
addition of this file nor have my PCs running Win Me (only one of which I
still have).

As a check In the last few minutes I have installed and run EAC with no
problems on a clean install of Win Me. I didn't need to use/install
Adaptec's aspi layer not did I have to use a copy of WNASPI32.DLL from
Nero. It just worked, As a test I have installed and used without
problem a number of different versions of EAC ranging from v0.85b from
Sept 1999 to the most recent v0.99pb3 released August 2007.

Your problem doesn't lie with EAC but elsewhere, I'm guessing something
you have installed has made a registry change that is perhaps causing the
problem. As to what that change might be, I am unable to help.

You are correct that the "ripping programs" I listed in my
original post won't communicate with my drives. However, my
"audio player" programs and Easy CD Creator can communicate
with the drives. I don't understand this so I have done a
System Restore to take me back to before I started
installing "rippers" and before I started copying/pasting
WNASPI.DLLs. Who needs a "ripper" anyway <bg>.

Yes I did neglect to include the type of drives. They are
MITSUMI CR-48X5TE and
SAMSUNG SC-148C.

On _your_ system maybe but the problem isn't intrinsic to
Win Me. In fact
you are probably one of few having such problems in the
seven plus years
since Win Me was released. There are lots of availalble
applications
including even Windows own Windows Media Player - not that I

I have never needed to use an additional ASPI layer my Win
Me PC - I
simply mentioned this as a possible fix for when EAC cannot
see the
optical drives. It was on a PC running XP where EAC having
worked without
problem for a number of years that suddenly couldn't see the
drives where
I solved the problem by placing a copy of WNASPI32.DLL from
Nero in the
EAC program folder. Ahead/Nero's file WNASPI32.DLL isn't
tied to a
specific version of Nero. The version I am using is
2.0.1.74 dated
October 2004. EAC on other machines running XP has never
needed the
addition of this file nor have my PCs running Win Me (only
one of which I
still have).

As a check In the last few minutes I have installed and run
EAC with no
problems on a clean install of Win Me. I didn't need to
use/install
Adaptec's aspi layer not did I have to use a copy of
WNASPI32.DLL from
Nero. It just worked, As a test I have installed and used
without
problem a number of different versions of EAC ranging from
v0.85b from
Sept 1999 to the most recent v0.99pb3 released August 2007.

Your problem doesn't lie with EAC but elsewhere, I'm
guessing something
you have installed has made a registry change that is
perhaps causing the
problem. As to what that change might be, I am unable to
help.

Just sorry I wasn't able to help more since demonstrating that the problem
is with your setup rather than with Win Me per se is hardly satisfying for
either of us. Sorry about that. If I can come up with a fix I'll try and
remember to let you know but don't hold your breath.

Thought(s) for the day. You mention having Easy CD Creator installed. My
recent testing was done on Win Me systems, one real one virtual, that had
no CD/DVD burner, just CD and DVD ROMs, so have never had any burning
software installed. This prompts me to wonder if the problem might be due
to what is called an upper, or perhaps lower, filter installed by the
burning software. You don't mention, and I never asked, whether you have
DirectCD installed as it is possible that this might also be running
interference.

I'm pretty certain that DirectCD, like Ahead's InCD, can be
installed/uninstalled independently of its parent program (EasyCD or in
the case of InCD, Nero).

Sadly I've no way of checking but think that having EasyCD installed could
well be a factor in your problem. OK, I've just done a quick Google on
EAC and DirectCD and found quite a few hits including the following:

Hi Mike,

I wanted to share this with you since you were so willing to
help. I just ripped some tunes from a CD on my ME system
using Exact Audio Copy.

These are the steps that made it possible. First I went and
read the instructions at
http://radified.com/ASPI/forceaspi.htm . I then downloaded
the "older version of aspi_check" from
http://radified.com/Files/. (I had got a copy of
ASPICHK.exe from Adaptec yesterday but it didn't work well
in my opinion.)

I ran the aspi_chk.exe and it gave the following results:
Component Version Date Size
WNASPI32.DLL 4.711(0) 09/30/3 45056
WINASPI.DLL 1.00(65) 05/08/100 3536
APIX.VXD 4.711(0) 09/30/3 27723
ASPIENUM.VXD N/A N/A N/A

ASPI is not properly installed. One or more
components
have been replaced with older versions of the
software.

I then downloaded and extracted ForceASPI17.zip shown in
Installation instructions at
http://radified.com/ASPI/forceaspi.htm

Next I initiated the KILLASPI.BAT, then initiated the
INSTASPI.BAT, then rebooted.

Another run of aspi_chk.exe showed the following:
Component Version Date Size
WNASPI32.DLL 4.60(1021) 09/10/99 45056
WINASPI.DLL 4.60(1021) 09/10/99 5600
APIX.VXD 4.60(1021) 09/10/99 22603
ASPIENUM.VXD 4.60(10210) 09/10/99 7743

ASPI is properly installed and is fully
operational.
One host adapter has been detected.

I downloaded and installed EAC from the EAC_095pb5.zip at
http://radified.com/Files/
and GLORYBE I can rip now.
