DOS question

P166, had W95, then formatted with a W95 boot disk. Loaded several DOS
programs, normal folder situation.

On bootup, I kept seeing a W95 logo, starting W95, then it booted to a C
prompt. There was a small partition, non-DOS. Did Fdisk and removed the
non-DOS partition. Ran Fdisk again, now only C, no partitions. empty.

Reformatted using the W95 boot disk.

Since I will be working with old DOS games intended for DOS 6, tried to
reformat with a DOS 6.22 boot disk, message "wrong DOS version".

Tried to install Dos 6.22, it's method is leave the boot disk in and
reboot, install will start.

Did that, "missing system disk, insert..." with the DOS 6 boot disk.

Rebooted to (W95) C prompt.

Copied the 3 DOS install disks to a new DOS directory in C.

Rebooted, DIR at C shows the DOS directory

C CD\DOS, "invalid directory" tried several change directory commands,
none work.

Problem: The normal change directory function does not seem to work.

Advice

Are you actually typing C CD\DOS? If yes don't, leave the C out.

The win95 logo is normal and once to boot to the C: prompt...
you will be booted to dos7 and it should work just fine.
(you can get rid of the logo by editing a line in msdos.sys
for no logo, there should be one line that reads

logo=0

anyway if you wan to start all over and install an older version of dos...
if the drive is fat16 you CAN format the drive using a dos boot disk
but you MUST format it from the A: drive
and the boot floppy must of course have "format" on it

Thanks, Brian

cd DOS

"invalid directory"

I took pains to use caps for the directory as it was named in caps.

It boots up with the W95 logo and message starting W95 again as before the
Fdisk work, as if I didn't change anything, so still a puzzle.

Thanks.

I had thought that DOS 7 started with W98, but anyway, I want a
"original" DOS machine. So your way is what I wanted to try.

I tried exactly that, a DOS 6.22 disk with Format on it, ran format c:
/s, "incorrect DOS version"

??

ms

C

CB

When I wanted to install MS Dos 6.22 on a machine that had W95 B
which was in Fat 32 this worked for me.

Format the drive with the W95 disk. Decline the over 500 MB option and
it will format it in FAT 16.

Then put Disk 1 of the 3 MS Dos 6.22 disks in the A Drive and turn
machine off.
Then turn on.

It will install your Dos and re-format in Fat 16. If the drive is over 2
gigs, partition so you can use all the space. Fat 16 dos only sees 2
gigs.

As I said, worked for me. I hope for you also.

Regards...

If I read correctly at the end of a prior thread, your intent is to run
MS-DOS 6.22. Create an environment suitable for "dos" games. Run dos
games. What you've done in per this post is leaving me scratching my head.

You need to install MS-DOS 6.22 from its own 3 diskette installation media
to a bootable active primary FAT formatted partition. Do nothing else.

Afterwards, you need to implement either (depending on the game) extended
memory or expanded memory environment at minimum using himem.sys and
emm.exe.

You may, if needed for undefined game parameters and undefined hardware,
write a line to implement the mouse, write a line or more to implement the
sound card, for such an ms-dos environment. Will be in the autoexec.bat.

You may, if needed, reserve upper memory for implementation of your mouse
driver and other drivers in that portion of memory if using extended memory.

You may, if needed, instruct to load dos in upper memory to allow more usage
of base memory.

Unless properly implemented in an extended memory environment, upper memory
is not used. Base memory is the first 640K. Extended memory begins at 1MB
and ends at 4MB for MS-DOS 6.22.

If you are running "format" from the boot floppy and get the "incorrect
version" method...
thatg means that the format command on the floppy is NOT from the same
version of dos that the boot floppy was made from.

I'd get a new dos floppy made up and try again

1. From this prompt, do
DIR D*.*
This will generate a directory of all files and
folders beginning with D
but only in the folder where you are currently
logged. To be sure you are in the root directory
do a couple of times
CD..
that is C D dot dot (with no spaces)
which is the command to Change Directory up
one level e.g.
C:\Windows > CD..
C:\> DIR D*.*
Directory of C:\
DOS <DIR> with details
DEL BAT with details

DOS is "unforgiving" in that every keystroke
must be correct.

Thanks to all. Bootup this AM things look a little different:

1. Bootup, still W95 logo, starting W95, winds up at C prompt. Change of
directory on C still does not work.

There is still some hidden space on that hard drive, maybe why I still
see W95 messages? So I tried to fisk again to include the entire hard
drive.

2. If I put in a W95 boot disk at this point, fdisk- "wrong DOS version"

3. If I put in a DOS 6.22 disk #1, fdisk - "wrong DOS version"

4. Somewhere in this process, I was able to run fdisk, delete primary
logical partition, it called for the volume name, how to find that?

5. Turn off, boot with DOS 6.22 disk #1, setup, it starts usual install,
stops- message "can't install, there is already another version of DOS"
Yesterday, it did not start the install, so this is some progress.

Advice?

This is normal for the version of DOS that comes with Windows 95.

The directory probably doesn't exist. Try typing "dir /ad /p c:\" to
see them all.

Please explain why you think this is so.

Try booting with the Windows 95 boot disk, then run fdisk.

Try booting with a DOS 6.22 boot disk first.

It's the first line displayed when using the "dir" command.

Format the drive using a DOS 6.22 boot disk.

Thanks, Don

CD.. shows "invalid directory"

DIR*.* shows this:

DOS 14806

DO6 6700

2 files

0 directories

The above may be an idication to what is wrong.

Earlier I could not install DOS. So I used copy *.* c:\DO6 to copy all
DOS files from the 3 install disks to a new directory DO6. The copy
function appeared normal.

Previously, I copied the files from the W95 boot disk using copy *.* c:
\DOS. The copy function appeared normal.

But above, results say no directories, 2 files. And a directory of the
files of 3 DOS install disks are surely more than 6700 bytes.

Maybe there are no directories in C, wrong copy path statement?

Incorrect MSDOS version.

I have seen both the W95 and DOS 6.22 give wrong version, it used to have
W95 installed?

I would like to, mentioned in another reply, "another version of DOS is
present".

One thing that is evident from your and Don's post, the reason the CD
command does not work is because there is no directories present.

So the remaining issue is how to format the drive in DOS 6.22, several
methods seem to not work on this drive.

Sorry, can't recall, but had this issue before on another machine awhile
ago, removing W9X, to use DOS, message "another version of DOS is
present" after formatting. I thought format removed all contents.

Try creating a fresh DOS 6.22 boot floppy.

http://www.bootdisk.com/bootdisk.htm

Be sure to boot from the floppy and run fdisk and format
from the A:\> prompt.

Ben, thanks, you are always helpful.

Having tried other things, finally your help above did the trick, as
Philo mentioned earlier. A boot disk from that site has all the needed
files on one disk, no install is necessary, which helped in this case.

Everything worked fine, fdisk, format, boots up to a DOS 6.22 C prompt.
No W95 mention at all. It is finally a true DOS machine.

Now, one minor glitch, each bootup it asks for confirm date and time,
maybe thats a DOS default to live with.

Thanks again

Create a "c:\autoexec.bat" file. It can be empty or one that
actually does something.

Thanks, will do that.

Somethings not quite normal, yet.

I want to install DOS 6,22, my disks say with disk #1 inserted, reboot
and setup will start, it did yesterday at some point, but today on reboot
it says "Invalid system disk, replace disk....."

Would have thought that would go OK. My 6.22 disks are IIRC, the MS DOS
version.

Guess a question is: how to install, maybe copy files to C with a real
directory this time, run it from C, although that may not work with this.
