Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 mandatory update won't start

So I finally got a joystick! They were hard to find but I managed to borrow one. Nevermind that it's designed for right handers and I'm left handed - I'll make do.


Anyway, now I'm all ready to play but when I start it it says there's a mandatory update and to go to the Microsoft Store to update.


So I do, and after a lot of fiddling around I manage to find the update button in a dropdown, so I click it.


Then it says, "Pending" But I'm looking at my network throughput and nothing's happening - it's clearly not downloading anything. But now I've got a new option, "download now." But when I press that it just says it's installed.


So how do I get the update to run, so I can play with my new joystick?
