DCPROMO Question

[Ann]

I was reading up on decommissioning a DC. This is the last server in the
domain, no other servers are in the domain. I plan on running DCPROMO to
remove Active Directory and then shut the server down since it's no longer
needed.

My question is (and it's a weird one), when you're going through the wizard
and it states that the domain will no longer exist, does that rip out all
the information from the DNS server for that domain I'm removing or will it
stay there? (it's on a completely different server) Odd question I know, I
hope I asked it right.

Hi Ann,
To answer your questions would be yes to both. When you remove the last DC
from a domain it will remove all AD information. AD will no longer exist and
it will also remove DNS entries also as it is the last DNS server also
remaining in the domain.

SBS,

Thanks for your response.

Even though DNS is on a completely different server, and we were never
fully integrated with the domain, I only had one other server in it that was
not a controller....all my DNS entries will be automatically deleted that
still pertain to that domain?

I created all the entries manually....we have a need to create a new domain
and I thought I would get rid of this one, especially since we no longer
need the server and start fresh and do it right.

One other thing to maybe clarify is all my other servers are back in
Workgroups temporarily. I didn't knowif this made a difference or not.

Well wait a minute here Ann. you wrote that this was the last DC in the
domain and it was not a DNS server? If it wasn't then what DNS entries are
you worried about and if you start over fresh it will be a clean machine
with no DNS records will it not?

Hi Ann,

If the zone is on a member server, then no it will not be deleted since it
would be a Standard Primary zone and not Active Directory integrated. If it
is running in another domain, it will also not be deleted unless it's a
Domain or Forest zone.

The only time it will be automatically deleted is when you are running an AD
integrated zone in the domain itself.

If it still exists on the member server that is in a workgroup, then it will
stay there because it is a Standard Primary zone and not active directory
integrated.

Hi Rob,

I wouldn't expect it to pull the DNS zone out of there -- it doesn't have
permissions for that. I would expect it to pull the srv records that
reference the domain.

I don't have a domain that I can try this on to bear this out, but I would
expect those to be dropped... or at least scavenged eventually.

It's really dependant on how it is set up. I have seen it both ways, and
normally depends on scavenging. The Kerberos and Ldap records won't go away,
and neither will the host records. It's really moot unless Ann is going to
use the same Domain name again, in which case the worst thing that is going
to happen is that she has some stale records.

Correct me I'm wrong here but she did say that this was the last DC in the
domain.

"This is the last server in the domain, no other servers are in the domain."

She also said that

"I plan on running DCPROMO to remove Active Directory and then shut the
server down since it's no longer needed."

That said once she runs DCPROMO and removes the last existing DC as well as
DNS records there should be no reference to that domain other than on other
servers that were DNS servers not on the domain. For that she can simply
flush dns records there. No I'm assuming (I know it's bad to assume but...)
that since this server is no longer needed that she will be reformatting and
do a clean install should she have a need to bring it back as a member
server elsewhere.
