I didn't opt to use OneDrive. Why are many of my files now in OneDrive and how I retrieve them?

I just went to open a file and there's a red X beside it in File Explorer. Apparently I don't have enough storage space in OneDrive to save all the files that were moved over. I don't want to use OneDrive. The backup system I've been using has been great.

How do I return all files back to my hard-drive? How do I ensure Microsoft does not usurp my files again?
