Why is windows vista so slow?

Hello why is windows vista so slow my old computer has 512mb ram i know thats the minimum 1.7 ghz amd sempron 7500 and a nvidia quadro nvs graphics card
Any help to speed it up?
also aero isnt working even if i have the drivers installed
