To be able to play all the games I have in one place on one PC, I have put 3 hard drives in the same PC, each running a different version of Windows, namely W10, W7, and WXP, all selectable from a boot menu. I have tried installing all the games I have, starting on W10, (optimistic), and working down to WXP. The W10 and W7 installations are all fine, but the XP Pro drive was simply moved from an older, and less well equipped PC.
I have the same problem now with both XP, and MS Flight Simulator X, that "activation" is required, but when I try to activate over the internet, I get the same "server not responding" message, despite having a perfectly good ethernet connection. I knew I would have to reactivate it, but assumed I would have 30 days to try out all the keys I've got, (or could get), to see if any work.
It has taken me about 2 weeks to get this far, as I've had all manner of possible, but dead-end solutions, and obstacles along the way. I tried a virtual machine for XP, but proper graphics drivers are not available, so only simple XP programmes will run on it. I have a disc for XP which will load on any machine, but despite updating it with everything I could find, my MS Flight Simulator X, demanded msxml4 components, which remained missing what ever I tried. That is why, I ended up moving the drive that XP, and the games, were working successfully on already, onto the newer computer. Everything is working great now, except Microsoft, and their mania for "activating" 10 year-old software, and an OS that hasn't been supported since 2014.
I tried the MS "chat room" earlier, but they were most unresponsive, and unhelpful. It is a simple enough question, can I or can't I activate them over the internet. I am loath to even try with phoning, as I am deaf, and normally do text based communication only.
So, any information would be helpful.
