Last night when I tried to login to my Acer windows 10 laptop, it was stuck at the login screen for a long time. So I did a hard restart. After the restart, it was stuck at the 'acer' screen for a long time. So, I did the following:
1. I did an abrupt hard shut down 2 times to get into the 'choose an option' screen to restart in safe mode.
The laptop restarted again and this time, it did reach the screen where it shows the time on the bottom left but the screen kept flickering every 1 or 2 seconds and it didnt go to the login screen
2. I restarted the laptop and this time, I selected the startup repair, it took a long time and finally reached the login screen. I was able to key in my password and hit enter but it gave me a blank screen with the mouse pointer and kept working for a long time.
When I moved the mouse, I got the login screen again and, I typed the password again but it just kept showing the black screen.
3. I restarted again and selected the option system restore and it showed me restore point from 17 Oct 2020, I selected it and proceeded with the system restore. After a long time, it rebooted and it showed an error window from Norton which was something like this: "norton autofix error installation failed after system restore 13000"
4. After this I again attempted to boot in safe mode but this time it wouldn't even reach the login screen. So I shut it down and went to sleep.
5. This morning when I turned on my laptop again, it showed me the blue screen error stating : "Your PC ran into a problem and needs ....some error info ..for you"
Stop code: CRITICAL_PROCESS_DIED.
I tried the safe mode again but to no avail. Next I got into advanced options screen and selected my user, typed the password, opened the cmd prompt and tried doing sfc scannow but I got the below error:
"windows resource protection could not perform the requested operation"
6. In the same screen, I tried doing checkdisk, it was by default at x: so I changed it to c: and attempted chkdsk \r , it asked me if I want to do the following,
"windows 10 may run if this volume is dismounted first all open handles to this volume would then be invalid would you like to force a dismount on this volume"
-- I entered, N and then
it gave me the option to check at the next system restart,
--I entered Y, and tried to restart from the command prompt - shutdown /r, but nothing happened.
So I exited and in the advanced options, selected
"turn off this pc"
7. I restarted the laptop but again recieved the blue stop code screen and after it completed 100%, it took me to the advanced options screen again. I tried the scf scan now and chkdsk again but the same thing repeated.
As a last resort, I selected the 'reset this pc' but now am stuck at the
"choose an account to continue" screen,
I selected my user, but it wouldn't go to the next screen where I can enter my password.
Update: I was able to start the reset, it ran for an hour but got the below message
" There was a problem resetting your pc" only option is to cancel.
I really appreciate any help with this. Its been a long day and all my work is pending. Please help!!
