My XP Pro installation has been working well since I upgraded to it from Windows 98 and although I also run a PC with Windows 10, I have continued using the XP PC for some Excel, WORD, Publisher and Access work that was started some years ago.
Recently the XP software threw a wobbly and changed to a set-up that was completely different from my well-loved and reliable arrangement.
In particular, the desktop icons were affected but I was able to get to my work via 'Programs' having pressed 'Start'.
I re-installed XP Pro SP3 without uninstalling the existing software as I wasn't sure that I would be able to access my Office-based work files. The installation worked OK with only one file that the process couldn't find - I chose the option to ignore it but I didn't recognise the file or its parent program.
When I started after the installation, the XP OS was exactly the same as that before re-installation but, in addition, none of the work files produced with the Office programs is obtainable. I have no Restore points and no back-up files even though I was certain that re-installation would not affect any stored data.
Can anyone identify for me where the missing files would have been stored when XP was re-installed - all of the program files are available but cannot access the files that they have produced.
If that question can be answered and I can obtain access to the 'missing' files, I would then like to carry out a 'clean' re-installation of XP and would welcome any advice/guidance on the process. Thank you.
