uninstalling windows instant messenger

H

After installing regular windows updates my machine crashed. Upon rebooting I
couldn't even get to log in screen and got an error message that referenced
the windows instant messenger exe file. According to Dell support there was
some conflict with IM and the Windows update. I had to do a system restore
and Dell said I should uninstall IM before putting all of my stuff back on
the machine.

However...I can't find anywhere to uninstall IM. Is this even possible? Has
anyone else heard of this problem related to IM and updates? Does anyone know
how/where to uninstall IM?

Hello,

Well, I'm not sure how you have Windows Messenger on windows vista, but I
guess you are referring to Windows Live Messenger? And still, I don't get
why Windows Live Messenger would have a conflict with Windows Update.
Anyways, you can get rid of it by going to Start > Control Panel > Uninstall
a program > Find Windows Live Messenger in the list and then click on
uninstall.

Hope this helps,

I have never heard of it. I am using a Dell. Do you mean Windows Live
Messenger? I haven't had any update issues. Before uninstalling, I would try
to manually run the update again. Maybe you got a bad install sometime during
the day. If it fails, you can always re-run the restore.

IM is not installed when installing Vista, you need to do that manually, if
you did install it and ran the windows update then had a crash it has to be
something else, I have a Dell and never ever had a problem with Windows Live
Messenger (if that's what you are actually using)
Dell has no idea 90% of the time.

Are you using Vista? or XP? btw
