Windows 8.1 running on usb thinks its a desktop, and wont connect to internet

Hi so the laptop hard drive is dead, so i have to run windows through usb. Why is it thinking its a desktop, when its a laptop. Even with wired internet, it wont connect. The model is dell inspiron 15 3521.
