Installing game on external drive

I have an external SSD. There is a lot of space about 900 gigs. There is not enough space on my main drive to download any game. I can select to download the game on the external SSD, but it does not attempt to do so. It continues to say that there is not enough space. I keep on getting an error and it wants me to free up space even though there is more than enough space. Why is it having problems downloading?
