Icon position in Quick Launch

R

REE

How do I keep the icons in the position I choose in the Quick Launch
toolbar ? I used to be able to move them by dragging them into a
position which would then be kept on restart however , I can no longer
do this . The position changes . There is no "lock toolbar " in my
toolbar menu in quick launch . TIA for your help .

Normally, they stay put!

(1) You should reboot or shutdown with the START menu-- not with one of
those contrived shortcuts!

(2) Here is an article to consider...

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KBEN-USq130234
Save Settings On Exit Option Enabled by Default
....Quote.............
....snip...
Setting the NoSaveSettings field to 1 prevents your settings from being
saved. When you set this value, the following items are not saved when
you exit Windows:

Changed icon positions on the desktop.
Windows that are open when you exit.
The size and position of the taskbar.
....End quote.......

However, in my Win98SE, Desktop Icons appear to be unaffected by
NoSaveSettings. (But I never thought to check the QuickLaunch bar.) Here
is how to do it...

(a) Click plus signs, beginning left of "HKEY_CURRENT_USER",
& ending left of "Policies".
(b) Click "Explorer" in the left pane, & look in the right pane.
(c) R-Clk "NoSaveSettings", if there, in the R-pane, & select "Modify".
(d) Change it to all zeros... 00 00 00 00.
Right-Arrow to left of "01", use delete key, type "00".
(If in DWORD format, just make it a zero.)
(e) Exit, & it may be necessary to reboot.

WARNING: Do not get carried away in the Registry. It is very important
to the proper functioning of Windows. Muss it badly, & you must boot to
DOS & "Scanreg /Restore". Then, choose the date of the last successful
boot from the five offered.

Wow! Glad to hear it! It's rare someone gets cured by that one! Was it
the Registry or that you were using a shortcut to reboot?

Hmm. That makes it hard to tell what the cure actually was, but it may
well be each was 100% responsible for the problem. Anyhow, it doesn't
hurt to keep both items in that master post of mine. OK, glad you are
rid of it.
