Maximum size USB flash drive

P

PSRumbagh

I am using a HP Pavilion 6465 desktop (circa 1999) with a pair of USB 1.0
ports that is running on Windows 98 First Edition. The OS recognizes a 512
MB USB flash drive but not a 2GB flash drive (SanDisk Cruzer/U3 2GB). What
is the maximum size that the Win 98 generic driver will recognize? Is there
a driver available that will accomodate a 2 GB flash drive?

You must install a driver for each flash drive, either from the drive's manufacturer
or a third-party generic driver. The issue is not whether Win98 can recognise a 2GB
flash drive, but whether you have a working driver installed for that drive.
Additionally, Win98/98SE cannot use the U3 features of a U3 drive, and can only
access it as a standard flash drive.

Have you installed the SanDisk Win98 driver for that particular flash drive model?
Do they have a driver for that drive that supports Win98 FE?

I have the same SanDisk 2GB drive working on Win98SE, using the
JDUSBMS driver. This has worked with every USB flash drive I've tried it
with (I haven't tried a larger one than 2 GB). The driver set can be
found on the Web at:

http://forums.techguy.org/attachments/51167d1109662659/jdusb2.zip

(I notice that the .INF file in that archive is different from the
one I have--if you try it and fail, I'll e-mail you mine on request. I
don't know whether it works under Win98FE, in any case.)

The techguy one is 3 years old.
Here is a link to the current one (with a later .INF file)

The "generic" drivers I have had good luck with are these:
http://www.technical-assistance.co.uk/kb/usbmsd98.php

I have used their Win98SE drivers with great success. I have not tried their
Win98FE driver.

This is their Win98FE driver page:

I have an ATTACHE 1g and a 2g flash drive. They both work fine, even
both at the same time. You probably need a driver. Go to the
SanDisk website and get the driver.

Win98 does not include mass storage drivers that automatically
recognize all USB memory sticks and disks, like XP and Vista do. You
have to load a driver for each device.

You'll need to look on SanDisk's site for an appropriate driver. Start
here: http://www.sandisk.com/Retail/DriverDownloads.aspx
