Direct X 9.0 question

I have a problem with doing the update from Disk 2 of the disks I got from
Gary. I am trying to update an old Pentium 166. The error I get when I try
to do the update is: Gray box with the title: Direct X Setup

In box:

Processor type is unsupported by Direct X 9.0
Direct X 9.0 Supports Pentium-compatible and K6 class processor or higher.

Can anyone help me solve this dilemma?

All help appreciated

I have another problem but will post that separately

Earlier version may work better. Know of any?

DirectX 8.1 worked fine on an old Pentium 166 (Aptiva)
(Other limitations are your audio, Video cards and drivers.
While you can install later versions of DirectX "over the top" of old
versions, stepping back requires removal of the later versions.
I used DirectX versions 6 through to 7.1 on my old Aptiva.

Thanks Sunny,

The sound card is Advance Sound. S3 ViRGE PCI (325) This answers the reason
I may have not been able to install the Direct X 9.0. I will check closer to
find out if it has an earlier version of Direct X. I do not want to mess it
up. It has no way to do backups. I had to have the man reinstall the dial up
modem and the sound card drivers. It took a long time to get it back. I do
not want to go through that again! No USB or Ethernet card. I want to use it
for personal files etc.( if at all possible).

Best of luck, You may need to define the manufacturer of your sound card
in the search for drivers.
http://www.driverslab.com/drivers/Sound_Card/11/0.html
Then you may be able to discover what flavour DirectX works with it.
(Or start with an install of an earlier version and "upgrade" to version
7.0a

Some "notes" I discovered in my files for Win 98 :
Ver 7.0a is ideal with Voodoo 2 cards.
Ver 8.0a (use if games require it ?)
Ver 8.2 should only be used to fix online gaming problems.
Ver 9.0 is reported as no good with Voodoo 2 cards ?
