Install problem

I used TOSHIBA Satellite 2065CDS Configuration Builder CD with
Microsoft Windows 98 and TOSHIBA COMPANION DISKETTE to reformat my
computer hard disk. At the first time, It was successful. Then, I
forgot to register, updated the operation system, and tried to install
IE5.0, chinese version. It didn't work right. So I uninstalled IE5.0,
then used the Cnfiguration Builder CD and Companion Disketter to
reformat my computer and recover the system three more times. The
computer was shut down automatically during inflating the files. I
knew that reinstalling was not completed. But I still could reboot the
computer and enter into the windows 98.

The following message was shown up when I tried to take a look at
"Discover Win98", installing a USB adapter driver, or updating the
VGA driver.

It looks like to me that install was corrupted. The corrupted system
in my computer could not get any files from C:\WINDOWS\OPTIONS\CABS or
any CD.

What can I do to fix this problem?

------

Install

X This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut
down.

If the problem persist, contact the program vendor.

Then, I click "Details" and showed:

I have fixed my problem. Thank you for your help.

Now I want to register my old Windows 98 machine and update Windows 98
system and I.E. version. The Registration Wizard showed me a message:
"the Microsoft Registration web site is currently busy, try
registering again. "
Is there any way to register and update my system?

You don't need to register Windows 98. Just run Windows Update to
update your system.

Hello, Steve:

Thank you for your advice.

First, I connected my computer to the internet. Then, I hit "windows
update" in my computer. It directed to a website
"windowsupdate.microsoft.com/default.htm" along with a screen
"Internet Explorer Script Error". In this Error screen, indicated:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------
! An error has occurred in the script on this page.
Line:1
Char:1
Error: Invalid character
Code:0
Do you want to continue running scripts on this page?
Yes No
--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Either I hit "Yes" or "No" on this screen, this screen disappeared.
The update website didn't show any message.

Any suggestion?

Before my computer was infected by the virus and shut down, I have
already updated windows 98 system several times and has IE 6.0,
chinese version. I want to recover my computer to the preivous status.
