Gateway desktop OEM SE on IBM Laptop - display compatability issues!

[Teflon]

I decided to upgrade 98FE to SE on an IBM i1400-2911-411 via an OEM CD
for an older Gateway desktop model that my son had discarded. Don't
know the model.

Things are working, after a fashion, but the display adapter and
driver installed is the basic VGA, ala minimum colors and screen
density. Can't adjust either via Control Panel.

Wanting to have more than this grainy screen to read, to deal with
some other Windows' incompatabilities and peculiarities, I went to the
Lenovo site and downloaded the video driver for the original 98FE
installation - Neomagic MagicGraph 128ZV+. Installed it and the
machine upchucked - Windows damage message, Win stopped loading.

Got in to Safe Mode and got it back to the basic VGA, now Windows
loads again, but would like to have more than this grainy screen. Any
ideas and / or paths to follow?

Several curiosity items, the Windows SE startup flash screen looks
exactly like the old FE screen. Thought it would say something about
it being SE. No? Plus, that screen, and all the boot message screens
leading up to Windows loading, are in good shape. It's only when it
gets to the Windows login screen that it goes to the VGA bit. You're
probably going to tell me the MB is driving those screens and hands it
off to SE, which uses the basic VGA. OK, but back to getting SE up to
snuff, any ideas?

You need to install the video chip drivers...
you should be able to get them from the mfg's website

OK, but isn't that what I did when I got and installed the NeoMagic
driver (Neomagic MagicGraph 128ZV+) from the Lenovo website? That was
the only video driver available for that model ThinkPad. Is there
another set of drivers required for those video chips?

OR, since that ThinkPad originally had WIN98FE installed, does WIN98SE
now take a different driver?

If so, which one?

Win98FE & Win98SE should use the same driver.

Was the driver on the website written for win98 or was it for XP???

Thanks Ben, 2611 is the model, These old eyes can't read upside down
as well as they used to, plus staring at that grainy screen has all
but ruined them.

That is the website I went to and that is the driver I installed that
caused the SE upchuck problem. Haven't been able to find another, and
if FE or SE doesn't make a difference, could there be any conflict
regarding Gateway's version of SE for a desktop versus IBM's for a
ThinkPad?

Slowly going blind here. The good news is, SE is fairly stable now.

Go into the BIOS setup and make sure the video is properly configured.
Be sure to save any changes when exiting. If this doesn't help, you might
try downloading a fresh copy of the driver and installing it in Safe mode.

Since this box was running quite well on 98FE, and all I've done is
install SE, I didn't mess with the BIOS, so, there shouldn't be any
changes in the BIOS, should there?

I will check the BIOS and see if anything is amis. Was there a
required BIOS update for SE?

If Gary Trehune is reading this thread Gary, you have an incorrect
DOS parameter in the FORMAT command of your 'Clean Install' cookbook.
There's no \ after the drive letter - C: (Of course I know you knew
that, but it had me going for awhile, no DOS coding background, just
SPS, FARGO and Autocoder.)

Probably not.

I didn't see one on the Lenovo site. You might try starting the
computer in Safe mode and using Control Panel, Device Manager
to remove the driver for the display adapter. When Windows
restarts normally and redetects the adapter, click "Have disk"
and use the downloaded driver.

That's the process I used that caused WIN to upchuck. It installed
the driver, but when I restarted the computer normally to have WIN
complete the install, I got that 'windows damage' message. Switched
drivers and stopped getting the message, but lot of instability. Went
into msconfig - Sys.ini and found several of the components of that
Lenovo drive were still getting started, Unchecked them, rebooted and
stability returned, but the fixed 16 color and the 640X480 pixel
settings were still there.

Went in to Device manager and specified the Monitor as a Laptop
Display Panel (1024X768), that seemd to crisp a few things up. Either
that, or my eyes are getting used to the fuzz. It's becoming an
acquired taste. Still can't adjust the color or pixel settings.

While in Device Manager, realized I've also lost the Touch Point
device. Guess Gateway didn't provide the drivers or recognition for
that device in their OEM rendering of 98SE. Not a big deal, as long
as the mouse works, just another puzzle to solve. Sure beats
crosswords.
