my mic works on my headset, but not the audio.

good afternoon! i'm trying to use a headset i just got as a gift and the mic is working just fine, just not the audio. i have an adapter so it can connect to both of the little hole thingies for the cords, and it says the high definition audio is working, but i can't hear anything. i'm using a hp PC.
