how to play 5.1 sound

I have configured the 5.1 sound and when I test I get sound from all 6 speakers. However, when I play music (from Windows media player or Real player) only the front speakers produce sound. The rear and the sub are muted.

Is there some other setting I need to enable? the sound card supports the hardware, but I am unable to get it to work outside of the control panel test.
