Just to clarify: I may sound like a broken record, and make a bad influence of myself and sound like a big jerk about this but just bear with me and hear me out as this is not as bad as it may seem to be.
The version of Windows says 7, but I am actually referring to both Windows 10 and Windows 7.
Windows 7 Section:
As much as I love Windows 10 and its Tablet PC glory, the older versions of Windows really take me back to the early to late 2000s when things were simple with Windows XP, Vista and 7. The classic Start menu, The cool Aero Glass UI of Vista and 7, and all the stability those operating systems had back in the 2000s. I may sound like I am about to make a bad influence of myself, but just hear me out. I LOVE Windows 7, the operating system I grew up with was XP, but 7 was what really blew me off the face of the Earth. The visuals from Vista made this OS just as Legendary as Windows XP and 95, but the thing is that the redesigned Start menu got me to really like the OS even more and since I have been using it since 2011, I have had fun using it on computers that I have owned/used for years.
Then 2020 comes.
I log on to a Windows 7 laptop that I acquired from a family member of mine, and the EOS screen blows up onto my screen. I understand that it is out of support, I love Windows 10 to death but seeing this screen on a computer that I have used since Mid 2020, with the best "Classic" version of Windows there is, was the last straw for me. I was in a tsunami of tears and frustration!
Windows 10 Section:
As much as this operating system is usful and looks like a very good operating system to use it does have its flaws. I downloaded the update assistant to update to 20h2, And I had a toolkit called EdgeChromiumBlocker to prevent the new Microsoft Edge from installing, the update finishes and What do I see? The new MS Edge that's what. (Just to clarify, I tried this browser and I love Chromium-Based browsers, but being restricted to Bing and an Outlook acct. can get really annoying. I use Google Chrome and the Chromium browser myself because Google is my Go-to Search engine and you can install adblock extentions.)So I tried to uninstall it from Control Panel. And I onlyhad the option to change the installation. I then tried to use PowerShell as TrustedInstaller, but that didn't work either. So I had to go into the Files in Explorer. Take the Ownership via Regedit, and move it to the Recycle Bin, then empty it. It just doesn't have the same Oomph to it as Chromium itself. On Windows 7 you can easily remove it from Control Panel, and it is gone for good. But on Windows 10 it's just plain annoying to get it off my laptop (I have an ASUS X540SA running Windows 10). The legacy version of Edge I can get removed easily from an official command script. That is done then and there, run it as Admin and poof uninstalled. I know you removed these for system performance and boot and shutdown speed, but I miss hearing a logon/Logoff sound play when you sign in to Windows, sign out, lock, and unlock. I really want those sound protocols back in Windows 10. In Windows 7 those sounds make me feel like the operating system is giving me a warm welcome of the decade, like it's saying; "Welcome, enjoy you day!". On Windows 10, Silence. Just. Pure. Silence. Like the OS is saying; "Uh, hello I guess." I don't feel welcomed just having the screen fade to the desktop without a beautiful sound playing as it fades. I know you can do that with Task Scheduler and VBS scripts but no matter the RAM or CPU speed, it takes like at the best 5 MINUTES for the sound to play. You can have the Windows Logon and Logoff sounds appear in Control Panel, but even if you set it to play a sound it will not play no matter what you do in the Registry, or if you find any workarounds.
I am starting to feel bad and tear up as I am typing this. I just really want the logon, logoff as well as the shutdown sound protocols back in Windows 10. While the new Start menu looks great, there are a lot of things that I miss from the Start Menu on Windows 7. The 2 menus, the All Programs menu, it was THE menu to start programs not on the Desktop. While you can turn off the tiles part in Windows 10, it just shows the All Apps menu and no recently opened programs. While you can use 3rd party software, like Classic Shell or Open Shell. It just bogs down your system no mater the CPU and RAM. I just want the old start menu to be a personalization option in Settings. the classic personalization is gone from Control Panel and I don't like that. While you can use 3rd party software like PersonalizationPanel10 and Winaero Tweaker from winaero.com, it looks very accurate but doesn't look the same. I really want there to be an Aero Glass theme to make windows look like they did in Windows 7 the Aero glass transparency, the rounded corners and the colored Close, Restore, and Minimize Buttons. The Classic theme is awesome too and I would really appreciate it if it made a return on Windows 10, the gradient title bars the advanced appearence options that can really make Windows look great with something like the Classic theme. While you can use 3rd party software like WindowBlinds and Transformation Packs. It just doesn't look the same and one program is behind a ridiculous paywall. It would be fantastic if those themes made it back to Windows 10.
I am sorry if it sounded like I was being a total jerk and demanding and saying that Windows 10 isn't perfect, but I just have Nostalgia for Windows 7 and it will be my favorite OS with 10 coming second until the end of time. I hope you find this helpful and take some things into consideration .
