Computer backup fails

My Windows 7 computer says it's low on memory. I have made several attempts to backup the computer to a brand new 232 GB USB drive, but it fails every time. I get messages like, "Backup failed while trying to read from shadow copy on one of the volumes being backed up . . . . check event logs for relevant errors" or "shadow copies of volume C were aborted because shadow copy storage failed to grow". What? Which volume? What's wrong with it? Does any of this sound familiar?

There are others, but I have no idea what the errors mean. I don't want to back up my computer to the cloud. I want my files in a place where I won't be dependent on my ISP or anyone else to access them. However, I'm not sure if storing data in the cloud would work either.

I did not grow up with these machines like kids do today, so I learn mostly by trial an error. In other words, I'm old. lol I don't even want to upgrade. Windows 7 is good enough for me. I just don't understand why the backup won't work or how to fix it. Am I going to have to transfer every file to the USB drive, one at a time? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
