Clarification in WSUS

S

Shanthi

I am using WSUS on Win2003 SP2 platform. Yesterday the system boot drive got
crashed but am able to get the downloaded updates, logs and database of WSUS.
Can I load the same on another system which is not required further
downloading of updates and configuration of WSUS.

Please update a suggesstion to resolve this.

Isn't that more 'elegant' than microsoft.public.softwareupdatesvcs ? <w>

Thanks Mow

I actually was unaware of the server.update_services
NG replacement for the one used during SUS days.

The update content is definitely reusable, except if any file was in-transit
at the time of the crash. Obviously that file will be incomplete, and thus
unusable.

The logfiles are merely text files, and they can be copied into the new
installation (as archive files, I would recommend) after the new system is
installed and functioning.

The database is probably trashed. If the system drive crashed while the
database service was up and running, then the database was terminated in an
unstable state, and it's highly unlikely that you'd be successful at trying
to re-use it. However, it's not going to hurt anything to try to re-use it.
Here is the procedure I would recommend for restoring this server.

[1] Make sure the %programfiles%\Update Services\Logfiles folder is saved to
someplace safe.
[2] Make sure the SUSDB.mdf and SUSDB.ldf database files are saved to
someplace safe.
[3] Make sure the ~\WSUSContent folders are saved to someplace safe.

"Someplace safe" in the above three means someplace other than the
system volume where you are reinstalling Windows and WSUS.

[4] Rebuild your "new" WSUS Server, as a WSUS Server from scratch. Perform
the initial sync to get the product/classification listings, but do *not*
expend the effort to perform the full initial synchronization to populate
the database (i.e. leave the server in Manual Synchronization mode).
[5] After the new WSUS Server is installed, restore the ~\WSUSContent
folder. Make sure you use a methodology that maintains ACLs on the
subfolders, or else you'll have to "repair" the ACLs on the new server.
[6] DETACH the new (empty) SUSDB database from the new WSUS Server
installation.
[7] MOVE the new (empty/detached) SUSDB.mdf and SUSDB.ldf files to someplace
safe.
[8] Restore the original SUSDB.mdf and SUSDB.ldf files to the database
folder.
[9] ATTACH the original SUSDB database.

To perform steps [6] and [9] on a Windows Internal Database server, you will
need to learn how to use SQLCMD and the appropriate stored procedures
(sp_attach_db and sp_detach_db). If you're using an actual SQL Server
instance, you can do the detach/attach with SQL Server Management Studio.
(Note: It's also possible, using named pipes, to link SQL Server Management
Studio to the WID, but it's probably easier to learn how to use SQLCMD and
the stored procedures.)

If the ATTACH succeeds, try running a synchronization, and then test to see
if the WSUS Server can successfully execute a detection/reporting event with
itself. If so, then test to see if a client system can do the same. If so,
you may be good to go.

If the ATTACH does not succeed, don't waste any more time. If you've got a
backup of the database, you could try restoring that otherwise, repeat
steps [6] through [9] to restore the new (empty) SUSDB database into your
new WSUS Server, run an initial synchronization, and rebuild the server from
scratch -- which won't really take that long since you already have the
content in the filesystem (and which is why I suggest not wasting time on
trying to reattach the original database more than one time).
