Bluetooth Audio Devices Disconnect When Playing Audio

Issue Description:

After pairing my audio device it shows as connected in the Bluetooth settings. When I tab out of settings and play audio, the Bluetooth device disconnects (neither bluetooth nor the audio device is turned off, the device just disconnects). Sometimes the device disconnects instantly and other times it will play audio out of the Bluetooth audio device for up to about 30s and then disconnect. If I do not play audio, the device will show as connected in settings as normal.

System Info/ Notes:

I have a PC that has onboard Bluetooth and I have purchased a Bluetooth adapter/dongle (TP Link UB4A) as the signal from the motherboard wasn't very good. I disabled the built-in Intel(R) Wireless Bluetooth(R) driver in device manager then plugged in the dongle which installed its drivers. I then paired my audio device and experience the issue as described.

Troubleshooting I have tried:

  • Pairing a different audio device (same issue)
  • Testing the Bluetooth dongle in a different PC (This PC does not have onboard Bluetooth and the Bluetooth dongle works with no issues)
  • Restarting and changing Bluetooth Support Service properties to startup type automatic from manual (no change)
  • Restarting my PC multiple times (no change) - especially after changes
  • Removing the audio device from Bluetooth devices and repairing (no change)
  • Removing the dongle and uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers (no change)
