app crash followed by loud buzzing sound – but PC still working

Note : I saw this post with a similar problem, where the answer suggests using a Driver Verifier to determine the cause of the Blue Screens of Death. But in my case, there is not always a BSoD, it is even quite rare… The problem therefore seems different (but maybe not ? I will try this solution anyway, but I would like to know if you have another idea)

So, here is my problem:

Sometimes, my laptop's left speaker (and not the right one) buzzes extremely loudly, as can be heard on this video I made: https://youtu.be/EUYqtFHB_0M. The only way to stop this noise is to shut down the PC completely.

When this happens, the computer is still perfectly usable, everything seems to be working fine. (except for one detail: impossible to access the sound settings ... to try to deactivate/reactivate the speakers, as a workaround) And there is apparently nothing abnormal in the task manager, everything seems to work normally, same for GPU temperature.

I looked in Windows reliability history, and the problem is often caused by an app crashing, but it's not related to a particular app (this happened to me several times while using Zoom, but also on VirtualBox, Minecraft, OBS Studio…). Here are the screenshots of the last two issues :

And the problem is unpredictable: I never succeeded in causing it voluntarily by reproducing the crash conditions, or even by subjecting the PC to an intense effort ...

→ Unfortunately, therefore, I will not be able to test a possible solution quickly, but I remain open to any suggestion.

Specifications of my laptop :

- Lenovo Ideapad 5 14ARE05

- CPU : AMD Ryzen 4700U, with integrated GPU (Radeon Graphics)

- SSD 500GB, RAM 16GB

- Windows 10 (I made several updates, with still the same issue)

It is worth noting that :

  • it does not seem related to the temperature of the components, nor to an excessive effort of the PC: I have already run games more intensively, in the middle of summer, without having the slightest problem ... And conversely, the problem has already arisen when I was not doing anything particularly demanding (on Zoom for example...).
  • my PC is brand new (I have only had it for a few months, and this problem appeared quite early).
  • I do not overclock.
  • it is not a priori a problem of RAM (I never reached my 16GB of RAM), and I did a "Windows memory diagnostic", and there was no error.
  • it does not happen every day, but the more time passes, the more frequent it is. And this week, it just happened to me 3 times in 3 days...
  • out of the ten or so times this has happened to me, I've only had two Blue Screen of Deaths. So this is not symptomatic of my problem.

And from the official Lenovo support site https://pcsupport.lenovo.com,

- I have launched all available scans, no error detected.

- I updated the BIOS twice.

- all my drivers were already up to date, but I reinstalled them anyway …

And that didn't change the problem, which reappeared the next day.

As the computer is still usable when the problem occurs, I was able to try a few things (with of course earplugs to withstand the noise):

- reduce/cut the sound via the keyboard: no effect.

- access the sound settings to try to deactivate the speakers: cannot access the sound settings.

- launch the sound problem solving utility: does not work.

- close windows session: no effect.

- restart explorer.exe : neither.

- shutdown the computer normally: extremely long (normally the computer shuts down in a few seconds, this lasted here more than a minute), but it works.

- shutdown the computer by holding the power key for 10 seconds: the only effective way to stop this noise.

Do you have any idea what could be the cause of this problem? Or any diagnosis I could make? Or maybe a solution?

Do not hesitate to ask me for more details on the problem if necessary.

Thank you very much in advance,

Gallien
