Hi all,
I've recently built a computer for my father-in-law, and he's having some trouble with it.
Now, the problems have been occurring since day one. Though the machine can go for multiple days without encountering any blue screens, it will occasionally happen again. Sometimes multiple times in a day.
The error codes that we have encountered since 1st January are: 139, 1, 1000007e, 1cc, a, 3b, 4a, d1, 1a, 144 and 133.
I've had issues with computers in the past blue screening randomly in this way and it turned out to be faulty memory. Under that suspicion, we started trying the memory in different slots on the motherboard, and eventually tried every combination of modules in the channels (trying 1 at a time, trying 2 at a time, trying slots 1 through 4, etc.) but the problem eventually did come back. We then purchased some replacement memory modules, but the problem persisted.
We also suspected that the issues might be related to software or drivers. We have made sure that Windows is fully up to date, and that all of the drivers are up to date. We have also updated the BIOS to version F11 for the Gigabyte Aorus Pro B550 motherboard. So everything is now completely up to date.
We did encounter some unrelated performance issues with an external hard drive that was causing slowness in Windows, not loading desktop icons, etc. but this did prompt us to attempt removing as many external devices from the computer, except for the keyboard and mouse. The blue screen problem still happened eventually, though.
We are a bit stuck now wondering whether the issue could be hardware, software, or what. Our next course of action is to attempt installation of Windows on to a separate hard drive, to rule out some hardware issue with either the M.2 drive (or M.2 slot on the motherboard) and to rule out me having not installed Windows properly! If the problems cease from there, then we know that the issue is related to one of those things and can move forward.
After that, if we continue to get the problems, I do not know what to try. Replace the processor? Motherboard? It's all very time consuming and frustrating, and I have had bad experiences sending back faulty parts in the past and the vendor refusing RMA due to no faults found. My father-in-law is a pensioner and can't be dealing with that type of stress and floating that kind of money.
Hopefully somebody here can advise?
