help with upgrade

I currently have Windows 98 on my computer and am thinking about upgrading it
to Windows XP. I was doing the Upgrade Advisor I found on the Microsoft
sight to see if my computer would be compatable. It is suppose to give me a
report of things that may not be compatable. Before I get to the end of the
"check" I get an error which reads Library Load Failure err=1157 485. I was
wondering what it means and what I can do to get past this so I can continue
with my "check" with Upgrad Advisor.

First off...if your machine is old enough to have win98 on it...
does it even have the specs for XP???

Realistically you'd need a 500mhz -1ghz cpu (or more)
and at least 256megs of ram.
If your machine has that much or more, it probably will be fine for XP...
however to upgrade your win98 may present a problem.

I'd consider backing up your data and performing a clean install

philo's suggestions are right . . .

if you are migrating to Windows XP, then (in order of importance)
1) make sure your hard drive is 20GB or more. Windows XP will use
about 12GB once all updates have been downloaded. If you don't
have a lot of 'stuff' on your computer, then 15GB may be sufficient.
2) memory will affect speed. Minimum for XP is 128MB, but be prepared
to wait for the computer at times. Best ... put in as much memory as
you can ... (a) as you can afford, and (b) that the computer will
hold.
If your computer is older than 3-4 years, you might find memory on
Craig's List (or other used place) that is cheaper.
3) Processor speed. It matters, but memory probably matters more.
If you have a lot of memory, a 500mHz machine will run pretty fast.

My own recommendations for minimum requirements for an XP machine: 500+MHz
CPU, 512 MB RAM, 40GB hard drive. Anything less and the machine is a
cripple. You can find out those first two important details by
right-clicking My Computer then clicking on Properties. The General tab
shows CPU and RAM specs. Note that any hardware upgrading needed to meet
these specs will almost certainly cost more than a new machine, especially
when you include the cost of XP itself, which would be included in the price
of a new machine (yes, you can still get new machines with XP instead of
Vista.)

I also agree that an Upgrade is unwise, that a "clean install" is the way to
go. You can use the Upgrade version of XP to install clean so long as you
have the original 98 installation CD to show to XP setup for eligibility
proof.
