Windows 9x/98SE, Me Updates/Patches/Downloads

B

BMillikan

I know Microsoft has removed the online support for Windows 95, 98, 98SE &
ME. However, I have a ton of learning CDs for my 3-year-old and they are
Windows 3.1 or Windows 95 only (some of them). So, I need to be able to get
the patches/updates for Win95-WinMe somehow. Can anyone point me in the
right direction?

Thanks,
Brian

You can still download patches and updates for Win 98/98SE and Win Me from
the Windows Update site
(http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp) or if you wish to
download and burn copies to a CD for later use rather than install use the
Windows Update Catalogue
(http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/catalog/en/default.asp) although
the latter must be accessed from a PC running a Win 9x operating system -
later operating systems are now redirected to the v7 Catalogue site that
has no Win 9x content.

You don't need any updates or patches for you kid(s) to use some
CD's.

You only need them if you will be connecting to the Internet and
using MS Internet Explorer/Outlook Express.

Don't. It's asking for trouble. Use Opera 7.23 from
www.oldversion.com

Now, don't get all ruffled up, but WHY in the world is a

"Computer/Software Engineer, Microsoft Control Applications
(Dialog-Based) Specialist etc."

asking this basic-as-can-get question?

That's quite true...

but if you do want the updates for win98/ME...if the machine has IE6
installed
you can still gte them.

It's simply that MS is no longer writing new updates

Why? Opera 9.25 runs under Windows ME.

The BEST place to get them with ANY browser - as the web was
intended to work in the first pace - is:

http://exuberant.ms11.net/98sesp.html

You can then examine them without going through the pages and
pages of MS explanations and decide if you REALLY need any of
them.

It may "run" but it won't run as fast and will crash more on
98SE.

Well, my future plan is to connec that compute to my domain and give it
limited access to the internet. But, there are no such plans right now.
Despite all the bad stuff out there on the i-net, there are some good sites
for preschoolers (especially playhouse Disney's web site).

Why am I asking? Because I'd like a fully patched/updated/upgraded
Win95/Win98/Win98SE/WinMe collections of CDs for the future because I also
have an (almost) 1-year-old that will be using the same software and it is
only for Windows 3.1 or Window 95 (some of them). The "emulation mode" in XP
and Vista have only been successful in some applications. But, not for games
like that. So, I have to revert back to Win98 (at this point).

If I were you I'd just go to some garage sales or eBay and get a
$20 486 or PI for him/her, WITHOUT a modem, although it'd
probably be at least 2 years before s/he could figure out what
do with the modem...

I don't let ANYONE touch my computers, let alone a 1-year old

That's what I thought, but why is it that MS is always releasing
"Security Updates" and Netscape, Firefox, Opera, etc. never do. At
most they release a "new version" every once in a while. Is that
where they include security changes, or do they just have fewer
vulnerabilities than MS products.

Yeah, that seems to be a new meaning for the word support, from the
point of view of those who were writing the updates. Now there seem
to be 2 meanings to the word support.

Hi BMillikan ... I had a similar question about two days ago. Here is a copy
of a useful reply ... that can save you a lot of time. He has CDs with all
the patches and updates, sells for cost basically. Alternatively, you can
download the fixes yourself.

oops, forgot to include the note. Here it is.
BTW ... the responders are right that you need to be running from a Windows
9x machine to get the catalog. Windows XP machines redirect and won't,
therefore, let you get to the catalog. Wierd.

Firefox regularly release updates or patches. For example 2.0.0.10
released late November addressed a bug in the open source browser's "jar:"
protocol handle, a memory corruption vulnerability, and a potential
cross-site scripting hazard

Netscape is unsupported and I'm sure Opera also release patches as and
when required.

hmmm . . . not my day. Here is the rest of the note from Gary ...

I have a two CD set I send to people that has all the Updates for Win98,
Win98SE and WinME. Write to me for instructions (I ask $3 to cover costs.)
The first CD is a copy of the Feb. 2004 Security Updates CD, and the second
contains all the rest of the updates after those ones.

....
Opera 7.03 (3.3 MB)
Opera 7.10 (3.2 MB)
Opera 7.11 (3.2 MB)

HP Pavilion 6745C (700MHz Intel Celeron processor, 192MB RAM, Windows ME).
HP Pavilion m7590n (1.2GHz Intel Dual core processor, 2GB RAM, Windows MCE
2005).

I have Opera 9.25 installed on both. I don't see any difference in speed
which isn't accounted for by the different processors. Reliability is the
same Opera 9.25 doesn't crash.

Check your hardware.

The Mozilla Foundation (Firefox and SeaMonkey) frequently release security
updates. No security updates for Netscape, or the Mozilla browser suite,
though, because they are no longer even supported. Upgrade from those to
Firefox or SeaMonkey is recommended by the Mozilla Foundation.

Opera 9.25 is a security release Opera also releases security updates on a
regular basis.

Hello,
Just as a FYI, I run ver 8.51 on a P166 mmx, 3 gig machine with 98 SE.
It's fairly fast, bug free, with a lot of options. The only drawback is I
use Hotmail for my e-mail and it balks till I enter the password at least
twice. However, I think that's Bill's doing, not Opera.

Regards....

For the same reason that when you buy a well-written piece of
/specific/ software, like an image editing program, you don't
spend the next year having it crash all the time and having to
get fixes. The bigger the company, the more apt it is to release
crap just to get it out the door an make more money. That
statement probably applies more to MS than anyone else.

I have been using a Micrografx image editor (which had VERY
useful features several years before the industry standard - and
total overkill for everyone except serious professionals - Adobe
Photoshop) and they NEVER released any patches - why? Because
they wrote the software carefully and tested the hell out of it
before releasing it. The bad part is that they are dead. Corel
now sells what's left of their products. That's the sad fate of
people and companies who care more about quality than money.

Anyway, to make it shorter:
a) because MS is more concerned with money than with quality
b) because since it comes preinstalled and "free" on practically
every PC sold, most virus/malware writers target IE/OE as well
as Office.

SOME people say that the "insecurities" are there because MS
works with the NSA and leaves them there intentionally,
therefore hackers etc. are doing people a favor by discovering
and exploiting those insecurities and forcing MS to make the
browser etc. more user-oriented than "otherwise". Think of that
what you will.

Others just say MS is simply terrible at writing software but
great at marketing, using /any/ tactics necessary. They have
thousands of pimply kids who have never talked to each other
coding their software and NO single person has ever gone through
every line of the code for Vista [and XP etc.] or Office because
it would take a lifetime.

So that's another reason why those programs are huge, buggy and
basically, CRAP. There are programs that fit on a floppy that do
everything an average user could ask for. Check out
www.tinyapps.org and be amazed.

I have said it so often I should just make it my sig. By the
time you install all the ad-ons and plugins for Firefox, it's
almost as big, bloated, and vulnerable as IE/OE. I tried it and
found it EXTREMELY disappointing. I don't know WHY Opera isn't
more popular. It is so superior to ANY of the other full-
featured browsers and they are the quickest at fixing whatever
minor security problems arise (SOME of the web dangers affect
ALL internet programs, not just IE/OE).
