Lost access to my settings and am getting "No mapping between account names and security IDs was done" error

Hello! I have a new PC and was trying to change my user name to shorten it. After I typed the shorter version I wanted to use, I suddenly lost access to Control Panel, Search box, and other Taskbar icons. Could anyone please help? Thank you VERY much. Rossella
