Is this file named "mny4.surfplace" legitimate? Should I open or save it? I'm
using MS Money 2005, which I've been running for a couple of years without
this popping up. Now Money won't run, presumably until I open this file.

When I Google "mny4.surfplace" I don't get any hits, which is
suspicious. Although you may wish to post your question in the Money
newsgroup (microsoft.public.money), it would be wise to do the normal
scanning for malware:

You can also submit the suspect file to VirusTotal. VirusTotal will
submit the file to numerous antivirus companies for identification and
send you a report.

Thanks for sending me to the Money forum, which I hadn't found. There I got
the answer to my question -- it was a corrupted registry entry -- and how to
fix it at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/917377 . I appreciate your help!

And I appreciate that you took the time to post back with the solution.
Thanks!
